Steven Tyler Apologizes To Nicki Minaj, Denies “American Idol” Criticism Was Racist

Earlier this week, Aerosmith lead singer and former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler criticized Nicki Minaj’s role as a judge on “Idol.” His remarks included stating that Nicki would’ve sent Bob Dylan “to the cornfield” if he auditioned this season. In response, Minaj tweeted that the comments were racist.

In an interview on Canadian show eTalk, Tyler apologized for his comment, and vehemently denies being racist.

“I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki,” said the singer. “But I am the farthest thing from [being a racist] … I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don’t know where she got that out of me saying I’m not sure how she would have judged Bob Dylan.”

Steven Tyler explained that he meant, “if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would’ve been thrown off.”

“Maybe I spoke out of turn,” said the singer. “But a racist I’m not, Nicki.”

    1. Nicki Minaj is the type of person who makes it hard on people when they really are victims of Racism. There was absolutely nothing racist about his comment. And, in his life, he’s done more to help hip hop get where it is then she ever will. I guess apologizing makes him the bigger man but he had no reason to apologize. What he said was his opinion on there show and she pulled the race card cause she was too simple and weak to form a n actual response.

      1. For real she used the race card as a defense mechanism and it harder for the real victims of racism which happens all the time.

    2. yall couldn’t find a steven tyler pic on google? anytime someone says something negative about nicki she throws the race card — it didnt even make sense to use it regarding his comment.

    3. Steven Tyler, an actual musician, should never have to apologize to this fucking piece of trash. O have never hated someone so much. I honestly hope someone on the show gets frustrated, goes up to her and breaks her face. She is revolting, a horrid singer, and an absolute fucking disgrace of a human being. In all honesty, she isn’t even up to the standard of being called a “human being.” So take that and call it racist Nicki, you fat slut.

    4. Yea Steven Tyler a racist yea right give me a break, you mean the front man of Aerosmith who collaborated with Run D.M.C. and helped give them shine when nobody in the music biz was giving Hip-Hop respect let alone the time of day, seriously the sooner this dumb broad becomes irrelavent the better it’ll be for Hip-Hop & music at large.

    5. Steven Tyler and aerosmith were one of the first rock bands that helped bring rap to the main stream with “Walk This Way”. Before this song most rock bands didnt look at rap and hip hop as music.

    6. Steven’s not racist. The stupid bitch should apologize for even saying that. He’s done more for rap than she ever will, in fact. Tyler the legend already posted why.

      1. ^Because since she signed with Young Money, she’s gotten literally, five shades lighter. That is why she’s white washed. And let’s not even mention the fact that she’s an angel on Ellen and all of these pop stations but the minute she steps ground on a black media outlet, she wildin’ out, being rude, getting her diva on, and calling niggas out by name.

    7. nicki u so young and ignorant steve tyler aint no racist dumb bitch fuck outta here young money so fucking stupid

    8. Definitely not Racist. Look, The United States is the most racist country in the world. White people get made of, Jews, Blacks, Chinese, Indians, Italians and so forth. The Best thing to do, don’t make racial comments in public or around people you don’t know. Just about everybody makes fun of the stereotypes of people’s culture. If a person is a racist, they should probably keep on the DL or with people that they know don’t see it as offensive. It’s really common sense

      1. I don’t think the U.S. is the racist country in this world. Yea, some people over here make some ignorant comments of bigotry. But at least over here, we’re seeing more and more people accepting and interacting with all types of minority groups. Other countries, especially countries in Europe, will still treat minorities, like black people and women, with very little respect.
But yea, I agree with you that people should try to refrain from making racial comments in public, as there are people who won’t take that shit seriously. I also feel like people should all just learn from one another and then all of that bigotry can just deteriorate. But all of that is just plain hippie talk on my end lol and it won’t happen anytime soon.

      2. At IDK:
I love how you make Europe sound like one big’ol country. I mean, it’s not like there are any differences between North, South East and West in the States either right?

    9. We live in a society where so many things are deemed racist, that the term has lost all meaning…which is unfortunate because real racism is alive and well and gets swept under the rug because of this sensationalization of the term. Racism is treating someone in an inferior manner based on their race. Criticizing a black rapper for something that CLEARLY has nothing to do with the color of her skin is not racist. Nicki is an entertainer, meaning that her craft is open for judgment and criticism. This has nothing to do with the color of her skin. She is also a celebrity in the public eye, and the star of reality shows, meaning that her personality…or at least that which she showcases on camera and in interviews…is also subject to judgment and criticism. She is a horrendous rapper, and as far as we can know, an even worse human being. I hope her most recent flop of an album is the beginning of the end for her career, but not because of her skin color. Because her “music” makes people stupid and she exemplifies what is wrong with America.

    10. I noticed the real racist white people are the ones who use terms like ‘race card’ and get really defensive when a white person is called out…The ones who say blacks are being sensitive and dont have the right to be offended by their racism. I can tell Steven isnt racist because he didnt have that reaction… He was very calm about it as if he knows in his heart hes not a racist and has nothing to get mad about or prove… Unlike the white people on this site who are the real racists. lol

      1. Exactly. “Race Card”, “Reverse Racism”,and “Post Racial Society” are all terms that white people came up with.

      2. haha you are such a hypocrite… talking about racism but then labeling white people like that… so you know white people made up those words? sounds pretty ignorant to me give me some evidence

    11. Up until now I just found her annoying, but for her to play the race card to score points when thats clearly not what he meant is despicable.

    12. LOL @ the people on here in denial about what Nicki did, getting mad cause people are pointing out that Nicki tried to play the race card for no reason.

Face facts, it happens. And it doesn’t even have to be a black and white thing. I new a cuban chick I use to work with who said are black boss fired her cause he didn’t like Latinos, when the truth is he fired her for being late everyday consistently and more often then not hungover.

People of all races fall back on cowardly excuses to avoid the consequences of their actions. Even Black people. Accept it

    13. Its a complicated issue with more nuance than people want to admit. There’s a lot of hip hop prejudice where people think that rappers and hip hop heads are ignorant. Many are, however that’s the case with any genre. Hip hop comes from primarily black and latin culture, and this is where the complication comes from.

Nicki was right in believing it was a prejudicial remark, but it wasn’t based in race.

      /end issue.

    14. aint no way around it… Steven Tyler is a RACIST!

congrats Nicki for forcing that white boy to apologize. ha

    15. Seriously, is it that racist and to think Nicki Minaj would not like Bob Dylan (in both the context of the show or in private life). I’m black and listen to a wide variety of music, but my eclecticism was under fire (living in the south in the Cash Money era). Granted it was a small sample to black folk living in LA, NY, ATL, where your more likely to find a melting pot of minds but for the most part black folk ain’t digging either of these cats. If the shoe fits is all I’m saying. Anyway she is not right to judge any contest.

    16. Obviously a lot of you aren’t getting the point the point of Stevens comment. Bob Dylan to some has a terrible voice and to others he is an artist. Minaj pulling the race card is her lack of ability to defend herself from Stevens comment. I doubt Bod Dylan is in her iPod so man up bitch and say you would kick a man like Bob Dylan off the show because he’s not you’re taste. You’re entitled to your opinion. Has nothing to do with race. Personally I think it has more to do with your background but that’s a diff topic. Dumb cunt pissed on my day with her influential ignorance!!

    17. If Steven Tyler would’ve used a Black artist or a cotton field as an example I would understand Nicki pulling the race card, but there’s nothing racist about a white guy describing another white guy being sent to a cornfield. Nicky just made an ass out of herself (as if that’s hard).

    18. I think Steven Tyler and Mariah Carrey have problems with NM because unlike them, she’s acting like she’s twelve. Here she is making millions off a show, yet from the moment she gets there has been acting like she rules the world. Then to throw the word racism around as if Tyler hasn’t been around for how many years, and probably could have said much worse if he had really felt like it wouldn’t have mattered. Point is, be professional. That’s how you last in this business.

    19. We are all people..

Steven Tyler is definitely not racist, let’s be real.. he probably banged a lot of black chicks in his day; hell maybe even black dudes..

    20. On the real though..

(Steal Lil Kim’s indentity + Lady Gaga’s + Katy Perry’s)*2+(plastic surgery + fake teeth + fake eyes) + The commercial music machine = Nicki Minaj .. notice no where did I say add intelligence.

    21. This bitching need to shut her mouth and respect a legend She so trashy my lil sister said she can smell tuna when she listens to here music. She is a bad influence on the youth and should be believed in a aa pagan gid
