Spike Lee Responds To Chance The Rapper’s “Chi-Raq” Criticism

Spike Lee appeared on MSNBC to address criticism regarding his Chi-Raq film. He is specifically asked about Chance the Rapper‘s comments. Among the Chicago rapper’s Chi-Raq criticism were, “You don’t live here, you’ve never watched someone die here.”

“Chance the Rapper should say, full disclosure, his father works for the mayor,” Lee says.

Chance the Rapper’s father, Ken Bennett, is Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel’s deputy chief of staff. Emanuel has been criticized by many, including Chief Keef, for his actions in office.

“If he’s so concerned about Chicago, do your research, show me where he’s made a criticism about the mayor,” Lee says of Chance the Rapper. “I think your findings will be surprising. He has not criticized the mayor. Why? His father works for the mayor.”

Lee says that Chance’s statement about not using Chicago talent in Chi-Raq is not true because he enlisted Chicago actress Jennifer Hudson for the film.

“She plays a pivotal role,” the director says. “Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Chicago. Why would she be part of a film, if what Chance the Rapper’s saying is true? Why would Jennifer Hudson be in the film?”

    1. The flim Chiraq did a decent job highlighting the ignorance of gang warfare, aka the Black KKK.. Though the potrayal of black women was a little too hypersexual. I like chance an i hope he an others are motivated by spike to use their platform to wake negros up an create positive change…be the change you wish to see in the world

      1. I agree with you a 100%!!! I also heard Rhymefest’s comments about Spike Lee’s movie and not liking its direction. The only issue I have with the movie is casting Nick Cannon as the lead which I believe was a mistake. I think the overall criticism of Spike is misguided. What Spike is doing is highlighting the nonsensical black on black violence that occurs in Chicago. He has more than enough cache to artistically present the issues within the black community on this large of scale. Anyone who lives in Chicago should appreciate what Spike is trying to do with this film which is bringing these matters to national attention. By the way , I can’t take anyone seriously when ridiculing piece of film making that’s entrenched in satire. As far as having so few Chicago residents in the film, please get over it. Not every filmmaker can hit a home run with actors with little or no experience al la “Straight Outta Compton. And, who’s to say that Spike did not reach out to actors with ties to Chicago but for whatever reason could not get on the same page. I heard he reached out to Kanye West first for the role that Nick Cannon got but he declined to be in the film. I think we should spend more time watching the film and treating it for what it is, a film that exposes the pandemic problem of “black on black” violence within our communities of color.

      1. Because fuck face that was a great comeback*…….btw*Hudsons family was sacrificed*I know*It’s Conspiracy*do some research people*

    2. 1) Chance’s dad is plugged with the pres, so that was a low blow from dude, but explains why he hasnt taken a shot at Rahm….and TWO…mafuggin Sluggo snake ass tried to charge mahfuckas to get on the sdtk and Spike found out…THATS why aint no drill shit on there

    3. Spike kinda has a point, Rham gave Chance the Rapper the “Key to the City”. Chance hasn’t spoken on the mayor’s action in the Chi, which other residents have been doing for years.

    4. I don’t care for fact that he is changing the subject. Now ppl are not talking about how he had no business making and marketing a movie about a place that he isn’t even from. Or his lack real Chicagoans characters, or his lack of research ( that’s not even Chicago dialect), or that he spits in the face of women in the city by depicting that withholding sex will end the violence. He made this statement to get the heat off of himself, but there’s way to many sheep to notice. O_o

    5. It is very relevant to have Chance dad as the topic. He works for a corrupt mayor from the Obama administration. I know alot of you uninformed ignorant trollls gone say, what does Obama have to do with this ? Plain and simple he is tge one that campaigned for this do nothing Mayor and got him elected. If you don’t know the Chi and it’s politics shut up.

    6. All detracters need to go read a book. You all have no real opinion just regurgitated rhetoric fed to you by imbeciles..
