As more and more people get their music digitally the CD has become, in many eyes, a worthless piece of plastic. It’s partly that attitude that leads to things like this: Sony Music Entertainment in shutting down a New Jersey Compact Disc Manufacturing Plant. According to CNET, the plant, located in Pitman, New Jersey, employed close to 300 workers, all of whom will be, obviously, out of work in the very near future.
The plant used to also produce DVD’s but Sony ceased production of those discs last year. The reasons behind the shuttering of the facility are obvious, poor sales figures for compact discs and the economic downturn. Sony spokesperson Lisa Gephardt offered CNET this explanation, “In light of the current economic environment and challenges facing the physical media industry, Sony DADC is taking additional steps to reduce cost from our supply chain network in order to remain competitive.”
Of course this doesn’t mean that Sony will cease all production of physical product. Sony CD manufacturing will now be done at plants located in Indiana.
NOOOOoooooo!
I will NEVER by a digital album!!
CDs and vinyl till my dying day!
I understand your love for vinyl (they sound better) but a lossless FLAC or WAV digital album is exactly the same as a CD, only without the physical space and non-bio-degradable plastic, why do you care if music is digital?
Bring back the cassette tape!
New York wack rap is flopping!!!!
open it in africa we have cheap labour here
Is that a good thing? What part of the homeland? East, West, North, South?
i’ve been waiting for this to happen. people don’t realise is that the majority of pressing plants are either owned by the labels, or rely heavily on the majors to survive. They will not stay open for the indies, i can assure you.
i’m sure they will move to mexico soon
but of course.
Man my aunt used to work there…luckily she retired..I feel sorry for the people in South Jerz, as if unemployment isn’t bad enough…CDs still sell, don’t believe the hype…the music sucks on them that’s the problem…
We are glad she retired before they started releasing the staff. What are the other largest employers in “South Jerz”?
I know they wrote “Indiana” but I read “India”
LOL! thats exactly what I was thinking too. lmao
If you really respect an artist, then wouldn’t you want a physical copy of the album they worked hard on. What are you going to do with a digital piece of trash that can be lost with the blink of an eye due to computer crashing or losing the song files from an external drive crash. I still like experiencing ALBUMS, CD and Vinyl meaning the songs are connected to make one full work of art. The artwork and liner notes mean everything to true fans. As long as artist are making classics, I AM BUYING PHYSICAL COPIES IN CD AND VINYL FORMAT. DOWN WITH THIS DIGITAL AGE.
We appreciate the heads up family! Everybody should start moving towards investing in innovated digital music companies. @LyricalSurgeon1
why dont they just have an offer to ppl next to the album download so u can just pre order the album so its shipped out on the release date. if u want album art n a hard copy
