Earlier this week, Bob Marley and the Wailers member Bunny Wailer made headlines when he publicly decried Snoop Lion’s decision to join the Rastafari movement as, “fraudulent use of [the] Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism.” Now, in a recent interview with LargeUp TV, Snoop discusses his relationship with the Reggae icon.
In an interview shot prior to Wailer’s public condemnation, Snoop Lion called the Jamaican music legend “my big brother.” He said that he and Wailer talked at length about the tenants of the Rastafari movement while working on music for Snoop’s upcoming album Reincarnated.
“One thing about Bunny Wailer is that if you ain’t real, he ain’t gonna be around you,” Snoop said. “The dynamics of what we were doing and what we’ve accomplished and who we are as a unit, as a team, [he] brought that together. And the spirit [of the Rastafari movement] most importantly brought it together because that’s my big brother and he needed to hit me with some information that was off-camera that wasn’t captured. When it was information that me and him shared that was private, that was special. I’ma cherish that, and I know I’m going to continue to grow.”
Despite Wailer’s disapproval, Bob Marley’s son Rohan Marley came out in support of the Long Beach emcee earlier, saying, “Our father’s name should not even be mentioned in this issue because like a true Rasta, he would have embraced Snoop’s reincarnation and welcomed the positivity.”
