SiR has made quite a revelation about the songs off his newest album Heavy, confessing that they were poems that he’d written while he was going through the rehab process.

In an interview with Billboard that dropped on Monday (March 25), the Top Dawg Entertainment star revealed that he went to a very personal place with the recording of the project.

“Most of these are poems that I wrote while I was in rehab or stuck somewhere that I didn’t want to be,” he confessed. “In some type of meeting or some type of therapy or whatever. [The songs] came from the actual places. It’s not like I waited until after and wrote the song; I was going through it when I was writing these songs.”

He continued: “And it’s the only way I really know how to write things. All the stuff that people love from me comes from such a personal place. The only real way I know how to share my art is honesty. I’ve tried to write cool lyrics and write a single or a banger, but it just doesn’t work out for me trying to do it that way.”

Earlier this month, SiR stopped by Sway’s Universe to discuss the project —which dropped on March 22 — and got real about why it’s been so long since his 2019 debut, Chasing Summer.

“A lot of people wonder why it’s been so long since I released music. It’s because I wasn’t able to,” he admitted. “I was going through my challenges with addiction. I had a couple of stints in rehab. I had to separate myself and really start over.”

“At the time, I was going through something and wasn’t talking about it with anybody,” he continued. “I’m a year and three months sober now. Got my life together and I’m blessed to be here.”

Elsewhere in the interview, SiR explained how the title track for the album doubled as a therapeutic letter to himself to really come to terms with his issues.

“Before I was even ready to talk to anybody I wrote a song about it and it’s on the album. It’s called ‘Heavy.’ It’s the title track, and that song in particular, it, it’s basically me crying out for help.”
