During a recent interview with ACCLAIM, ScHoolboy Q questions album reviewers.
“I spent a fucking year putting together Oxymoron, and these reviewers have figured it all out and made up their minds about it the day after it was released?” ScHoolboy Q says. “Come on, man. I poured my heart and soul into this thing. You can’t tell me you absorbed it all after one or two listens.”
When asked if he attributes this issue to “fast-paced music blog mentality ingrained in the industry now,” Q says he can see how blogs have affected the industry.
“As much as it helped the game, it fucked the game up, too,” he says. “When it came, people just got carried away. There was something dropping all the time. Every day, there’s four rappers releasing shit. It’s just getting out of hand now, I mean. I don’t want to be one of the rappers complaining. I don’t want to sound like I’m playing anybody. But I’m just saying: the game is kind of fucked up.”
ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron earned a 3.5 out of 5 X rating on HipHopDX.
“In 2014 it’s not realistic to expect a major label album to be exclusively comprised of the dark material found on Oxymoron’s stellar moments; that would essentially give you Joe Budden’s Mood Muzik,” HipHopDX says in its review of the album. “But the handful of ill fitting songs presumably positioned as singles tarnish Q’s overall presentation, and they can feel like excess baggage. Listeners in search of lighter fare will likely gravitate toward ‘Studio’ and ‘What They Want,’ unintentionally reducing tracks like ‘Collard Greens,’ ‘Los Awesome,’ ‘Man of the Year‘ and ‘Hell of a Night‘ to filler. Ultimately the good moments are on par with what will be considered 2014’s high-water marks, and if held they weren’t held to the high standards of Setbacksand Habits & Contradictions, Q’s low points would be acceptable from another rapper. Given TDE’s ever-increasing appeal, Oxymoron isn’t quite an elite offering, but it meets the difficult task of attracting casual fans without straying too far from the formula that attracted ScHoolboy Q’s core audience.”

the track studio is dope af
It’s a very mediocre album with only mediocre production. Only some good verses here and there.
I’m not sure why he thinks how much time he put into it dictates how it’s reviewed. I’m a big TDE fan, but honestly for every great song on this album there was one I wasn’t as big on.
He didn’t imply that at all, if anything he’s implying the reviews are just first impressions, rather than giving the album time to soak in and really figure it out. It’s a valid point. These reviewers aren’t listening to new albums every single day, they have time to sit down and give an album a couple run throughs and really pick out their favorites and pin point what they like or don’t like, before moving onto the next joint. Do you really only listen to an album a couple times then never come back to it? Never change your mind about a certain track, or suddenly hate a song that used to be your favorite?
Exactly, he wasn’t bitchin about the rating he was saying the game is fu*k’d up and the fact you can give a good rating in one day. I still pull out old albums today and they grow on me, this guy is metaphorically telling his true life story while making 5 or 6 dope tracks and the rest was a little less than I expected. Point being you can’t listen to something like OXYMORON in one day or even week before giving it a 3/5. I thought this was going to be a 5/5 but didn’t quite live up to that. Still was a solid 4 and a CD I can say I payed for and I’m more than happy with.
album isn’t even worth 2 listen’s. Boring lyrics with half ass beats.
I made some cheese with your mom’s titty milk and that shit wasn’t half as sour as your bitch ass.
Everything you said isn’t true or funny. Try again. At least the original post was %100 true
Only a stupid asshole thinks their opinions are 100% true. What is 30% true is that you are a no-talent bag of poop stained dicks.
You’re the one thinking or assholes and pooped stained dicks.
Says a lot about you
This fuck nigga is mad now because the reviewers gave his album a low rating but where the fuck was this nigga when H&C came out and the same reviewers game it high ratings after a day? these Hoe ass nigga always bitchin about stupid shit smh
Are you serious? “reducing tracks like ‘Collard Greens,’ ‘Los Awesome,’ ‘Man of the Year’ and ‘Hell of a Night’ to filler.” Wtf did I just read? Those are the best four songs on the album!!! Prob followed by Perscription/Oxymoron and Break the Bank. The album was dope AF in my book. I think it’s a solid 4/5.
it says “those looking for a lighter fare” will like other songs, you should read the whole thing
I felt that Los Awesome was the worst song on the album by a HUGE margin. I gave it 2 or 3 chances and now have to skip it every time it comes on.
Bitchin about your album reviews (which I seen more positve than negative for this cat) is wack. Just exposed himself as a ho ass nigga SMH figures… he ridin with kendrick lame-Ar
You’re lame.
The album is 3/5 at best. Get over it Schooly, you’re not a top-tier MC. Be thankful for the career that you have. Plenty of cats would trade place with you. If you feel slighted by the fans, get back in the booth with a vengeance.
Slighted by the fans? Are you brain damaged?
ScHoolboy Q wonders how reviewers can absorb a year’s worth of work in days.
Answer: B’cause yours raps aren’t that complicated.
Second UR not that distinctive as a rapper. Be happy with the career u have.
preach
This was the worst album from TDE. Probably about a 3/5. Habits and Contradictions was much better. He’s also the worst rapper on the label.
I agree. I give this album higher rating now then when it first came out.
Ya’ll need to get it straight. Q AIN’T COMPLAINING ABOUT THE REVIEW HE GOT!!!!!!! Take a closer look!! He’s complaining about the amount of time it took for the review to come out. His true complaint is about what he feels is an unnecessarily fast-paced incentive that blogs have. It’s the same as in main-stream major news channels. Whoever gets the story out first is recognized as better, regardless of apparent or self-evident object truth or the accuracy present. If “history is written by the winners” and this industry has defined “winning” as going to the first who writes it, then clearly there is a very real issue. Q never once says he felt he should have gotten a higher score so attacking that aspect is misguided and it’s missing the point. The fact that ya’ll totally missed the point merely perpetuates and validates what Q’s saying in that you read this article and immediately responded without timely and/or proper discernment. So some congratulations should go out to the past 4 negative posts since you have accidentally bolstered the very person you were tryin to attack, all the while making yourself look dumb.
nah, hes complaining about the review bro. be real, you think he would be “complaining about the amount of time it took for the review to come out” if the review was a 5/5 instead of 3.5/5?
Niggas can’t read bro. Nowhere does he specify a review, quote a reviewer, or name a blog, but yet and still he must be mad at some irrelevant review from some irrelevant blog.
@Anonymous I agree, Q probably wasn’t happy about what oxy got rated. Even so, he never comes out and says it. The fact of the matter is that the reviewer evaluated Q through a bad lens, which is the same lens that is starting to ruin the game. Fans who are educated in the rap game are tending to grade albums using “GKMC” as a template, or rather rubric. To be more clear, people judge albums based on if the entity as a whole is cohesive and has a coherent theme in one way or another. While I agree that is more difficult to do, and thus shows a more mature and deeper artist, it’s not, and should not be a requirement. If Q isn’t trying to put out a succinct project then it’s almost offensive to force that agenda on him and deduct points based on it. The same thing happened when blogs started reviewing Big K.R.I.T.’s more recent albums. He’s such a gifted and well-rounded profound artist yet he only stays on topic within one song, not the entire album. But hey, everyone is entiled to their own opinion, regardless of how ill informed and ridiculous it may be.
jay rocks follow me home and Good Kid Mad City were far better it don’t take many listens to figure that one out
realtalk…i totally agree..
