Whether they know it or not, Rap fans have heard the musical genius of Syl Johnson. The Mississippi Blues and Soul singer has been sampled on such songs as Styles P and Black Thought’s “‘Cause I’m Black,” as well as Kool G Rap’s misogynist’s tales “Talk Like Sex” and “Fuck U Man,” among countless other RZA productions.
The Numero Group has announced that they are packaging and releasing a box set from the 74 year-old. At 81 tracks, the extensive release titled Complete Mythology, features hits such as “Is It Because I’m Black” and “I’m Talkin’ ‘Bout Freedom,” among many others. Many of these cuts come from Johnson’s tenure on the Hi label, also home to Al Green and Ann Pebbles at the time.
The box set releases October 19. Pre-orders will receive a bonus 7″ and autographed liners from Syl. This guy is a true sample icon and a slept on soul legend. “Hollow Bones” by The Wu is one of the best flips of his material.
