Salt-N-Pepa spoke with HuffPost Live to share their thoughts on women in the Rap industry today. Blogger Mimi Green asks the duo if the baton for women in Hip Hop has been passed on or dropped.
“Definitely been dropped,” Cheryl “Salt” James says.
“We need more,” Sandra “Pepa” Denton says of the amount of women in Rap. “It’s mind-baffling to us to this day. We’re like, ‘Where’s some females?'”
The pair then go on to name the emcees that were present during their run in the 1980s and 1990s including Lauryn Hill, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Eve, Lil Kim and Foxy Brown.
“The list goes on,” Pepa says.
Both emcees say that they root for women to make it in the game. Besides Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, they want to see more women represented in Rap.
“Maybe we have to get together, the ladies, and go find some girls and put them out there. I have no idea,” Salt says.
“All these male rappers, they bring out the women. That’s a lot of them came from man camps,” Pepa says, citing T.I.’s work with Iggy Azalea on his Grand Hustle label.
“It’s true you almost need that stamp of approval, which is sad,” Salt adds.

What about Rapsody? Don’t sleep!
Tru indeed in my view rapsody is the illest female rapper/emcee in the game. Her skill sets are tight. 9th wonder DJ Premier Pete Rock Alchemist Dr Dre have already co signed her.
Word! Raps is dead nice. I bet salt n pepa ain’t even up on her…. SMH
Agreed, She is one of the true HIPHOP female MC’s of this time. True HIPHOP!!!!!! We should be proud that a female MC is here to counter all these male rappers wunnabees.
best female mc out there today is snow tha product!
Why is a seemingly gay men questioning the womans role in Hip Hop?
I guess he likes and want to hear Female MCS.
Jean Grae was always one of my faves out there
I believe that the BET documentary a few years answered the question. Short answer: sex sells. The reason why ( insert name here) isn’t “poppin” is because they won’t conform. Look at Nikki. If she didn’t do that, do you think that she would be as popular.
There are some real Femcees out there you just have to look for them.. I see some are up on Rhapsody an Jean Grae but check for Sammus my personal favorite, Nitty Scott, Angel Haze an Noname Gypsy…peace on the Internets
I agree, its definitely been dropped. The question is, who’s fault is it? I don’t think it’s due to the lack of talent so I think the responsibility falls on the labels, execs and those who prey on the female MC’s for personal gains. Just to name a couple, I like Snow Da Product and like someone mentioned before me “my favorite” Nitty Scott MC who is the female version of Kendrick Lamar in my opinion. Why aren’t these ladies getting a chance?
Damn, we are all thinking the same. I purchased all of Rapsody’s albums. She is a real MC.
