Royce Da 5’9″ Talks Slaughterhouse, Solo Deals With Eminem

In a recent interview with MTV News, Royce Da 5’9″ spoke about his future plans with Shady Records – both as a member of Slaughterhouse and as a solo artist – in addition to his relationship with longtime partner-in-rhyme, Eminem.

“Em gave me all types of tracks. Dre beats,” explained Royce, who had a falling-out with Shady and Dre in the early 2000s. “Just because the paperwork ain’t done don’t mean we ain’t been working. We definitely been throwing ideas around. [Em] stressed he wants to have a lot of involvement in the project. We want him to be as involved as he wants to be. Anytime he runs an idea by me, I respect him so much, I’m down with it. If he gives me a beat, like, ‘Yo, y’all would sound ill on this,’ I’m going to record it. That’s pretty much what we been doing. He ain’t did no beats and gave me nothing yet, but he has given me a lot of beats from other producers.”

When asked whether he would sign onto Shady Records as a solo artist, Royce stressed that while he was open to the idea, his present focus is Slaughterhouse. “Man, I haven’t thought about it. After I put this next album out, I’m a free agent. So I’m sure it’s a possibility. But it’s not something we’re really thinking about right now. I’m gonna totally focus on the group, because I think [this] shit could be something special.”

    1. AINT NONE OF THESE FAGS BETTER THAN SOULJAH BOY. PRETTY BOY SWAG MURDERS SESSION ONE. SESSION ONE WAS A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT. YOUNG MONEY ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. you must be kidding me.. he sounds like the cripple from malcom in the middle weezing between words.. get real. slaughterhouse is gonna ‘slaughter’ shit. get the fuck outa here with that soulja boy bullshit.. hes a fucking moronic bastard throwing garbage on tracks.

    2. Ok, first off, lets establish that im no Eminem stan. Im writing as a Hip hop fan who just happen to love Eminem’s music since i first heard him in 99. I wont compare his latest “Recovery” with “SSLP” coz 10 yrs is an age in Hip hop. Em has matured no doubt personally and professionally. This new album should be seen through a different lens and if youre below 20 yrs, you cant appreciate where Em is coming from. Sorry.
Ok my point of this post; Ive been struggling with calling this album a Classic since “Relapse” was dissapointing, i was skeptical at first but after 1 week of countless listens, ive let the album stew and marinate and im comfortable to call it a Hip Hop Classic!
Reasons are too many. Lyrically, metaphorically this album is fuckin flawless! Some people may have a problem with the beats but i think choosing diff producers for this project shows artistic growth by steppin out of the Dre cocoon. Maybe you oughta step back and look at the bigger picture. Classic.

      1. I agree completely. ppl dont understand that he grew up. the new direction was inevitable with the events he went through. all the hardship that he dealt with, he had to force himself to grow up. and this new mature em is still lyrically a monster.

(just a thought: am i the only one who thinks that “beautiful” from Relapse sounds like it was meant to be on Recovery….. hmmm)

      2. actually everyone knows he grew up like you can tell by his lyrics no one disagreed and its that most people want the old em back and i dont blame them but they way he is right now is fine but better earlier but he changed dont blame him

      3. “This new album should be seen through a different lens and if youre below 20 yrs, you cant appreciate where Em is coming from. Sorry. ” lol Go fuck you self. you raging torrent of s h i t.

im suprised you managed to stop wacking off long enough to write a comment.
however i do agree with your review on the album, except the what i have qoted.

        act like u know. ho’

      4. Recovery is a classic I noticed like after 3 days of straight listening I pay more attention to the lyrics than beats but its all round solid. I know his next project gonna be more Dre inspired but who can complain there perfect together (no homo) I hope he gets major feats like D, X, Nas, Jigga, D12 & Slaughterhouse!

I hope all of Slaughter get solo deals it will give ’em the recognition they deserve!

      5. Woa woa woa…I’ve never posted a comment on this page, however, after reading this…I MUST! Listen-(speaking on my own behalf) I grew up in BK, NY, listening to hip-hop that most of the ppl on this board have probably never heard of. At that time in the Golden Era of hip-hop and even a bit before (early to mid 80’s) then on to late 80’s, there were so many hip-hop acts JUST IN AND OUT OF NYC the calibur of emcee’s were, for lack of a better term REDUCULOUS! BEATS-NO COMMENT! I remember when I first heard Em spit, it was My Name Is…then this kat introduced me to underground Em (WORLD OF DIFFERENCE) I felt he was one of the wittiest, off the top emcee’s I had ever heard! Even still! The kat is crazy with the way he thinks-pure lyrical aptitude. TO me, thats where it stops! He’s a great writter, thats pretty much it! Beats…c’mon man….at best, most of his music selection is a tad above average. His chorus selections, cool for his songs but not timless! And that is the underlying factor of a CLASSIC! The music must be timeless, there MUST be DOPE BEATS, not good…but DOPE! Music that trascends time! JUST THE MUSIC without lyrics! Second, the versatility in beats and lyrics. A kat above me named a few classics-Illmatic, Enter the 36, P.I.F., Midnite Marauders, Low End THeory, Steaks Is High, Reflection Eternal, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, BDK, …c’mon man-the content of these albums can not be touched by ANYTHING Em has done. True music has evolved, but the definition of classic will never change. You wont be able to play an Em joint 15 years from now and get the crowd poppin’, or get a true hip-hop head nestalgic. Hip-hop is emotion, stories, LIFE man…not just tellin people how F’ed up ya life is or has been, and punch lines that result in laughs damn near all the time! And screamin on damn near every damn track he’s on, soundin’ PISSED everytime he rip! Not everybody wants to hear that! Em is a commercial success, but to label anything he’s done as classic material isn’t fair to what hip-hop is! NOW-this is not to say he CAN’T make a classic, he’s quite capable. Dre is a dope producer, HOWEVER, there are producers out there that have a sound that just elevates the mind man…ear stimulation that if rhymed to properly, is magic! I can’t recall any Em song that is pure magic on the ears man…The Blast, Electric Ralaxation, It Ain’t Hard To Tell, Da What, Mass Appeal, I Used to love H.E.R., Aint No Half Steppin’, Soul BY The Pound, Protect Ya Neck, Brooklyn Zoo, Get’em High, Simon Says….the list is endless!!!! By anyone who has a TRUE knowledge of what hip-hop really is, what it stands for, where it came from and the sad entity that the industry has TRIED to make it out to be ( I say tried b/c trith be known-hip-hop is still very well alive in the underground) but the mainstream hip-hop (rap/crap music) , those know and understand what a classic is! It’s about growth-true indeed, but growth should never forget it origination. WIthout origination, theres nothing to grow from. And even within growth, there MUST BE origins of origination, hence to say, hip-hop and what it began as and still is beneath the surface, is an art form that must be understood, not just listened to for a number of years. Understand what you are listening to, where it came from, where its going digest it-hip-hop is LIFE on a plethora of levels-levels that Em has yet to explore, thus, he is a very successful, decorated and accomplished artist, and perhaps timless because of what he’s done. But a classic artist whom has made endless amounts of classic material, he’s not in that categorie….YET! Just my spin on it!

        HIP-HOP 4EVER!!!
        Preem

    3. I’m a lawyer,30 ,rich but still single. It’s hard to get a girlfriend in my town ,most of them like my money more than like me.I just want to find my true love.so i uploaded my hot photos on — ** Matchrich.com **– under the name of hotlove2.u dont have to be a millionaire, but u can meet one there. ..if you girls see this message,i hope you will check my photos out there.maybe you are the one whom i’m looking for!!!

    4. you people under me are lost. Recovery is a solid release but no classic. U can’t listen to it front to back. Song with Pink is awful even though hes spittin his ass off. Tracks Cinderella Man and So Bad are great songs but those high points are accompanied by lows such as You’re never over and the previously mentioned Won’t back down. Yes Em’s wordplay is THE best in the industry but questionable beat selection, odd hooks plus blatant women appealing songs drop this out of classic territory. Sorry Em fans, If you consider this a classic then your blinded by this White MC’s triumphant return from MIA status or his appeal of being the great white hope.

      1. I agree. Recovery is a very good album, but I’m sick of the “classic” labeling fans have given it. It’s far from a classic. Classics are the Illmatics, 36 Chambers, Paid In Fulls, etc. Recovery is NOT on that level.

Not hating, it’s a very solid album, but its no classic.

      2. @ youajoke. Trust me i’m not bumping drake anywhere, its not about me being happy or not. You can love the album all you want but that doesn’t make it a classic.

    5. I hope Em does what Dre did on the dogg food album and just executively produce only because he would not add to this project at all. The ‘session’ track just showed how much better slaughterhouse were than him and ‘recovery’ was a major non event. It is unfortunate that in order to get global recognition Slaughterhouse have to sign with a now non progressive label who’s biggest star is the ceo, ah well….

      1. Slaughterhouse definitely slaughtered eminem on his Own shit. Anyone who says different is biased to Em.

      2. LOL, First off, it’s stupid to compare one emcee with a group of emcees. And that “Session One” joint, nobody spit all that great on there imo, Em and Royce certainly didn’t do their bests. And besides Royce said in an interview that Em had already recorded his verse, before Slaughterhouse were added on. Slaughterhouse better than Eminem? LOL, That’s pure bullshit, all are dope emcees lyrically (Joke Buddens is okay at times, certainly not good as his Stans say he is). But that’s just it, they are nice when it comes to spitting bars on a song, in a Wu wannabe like fashion….when it comes to being individual artists, they are nowhere near as strong as Eminem, and still have tons of room for improvement. Royce is the best in Slaughterhouse, and the only one in that group that can actually go toe-to-toe with Em lyrically on a song, and hold his own. BUT, even Royce himself has said numerous times that Em was better than him, and he’s even said that Em taught him some shit back in the day. Royce has Em’s influence and tutelage in him, so you have take some of that in consideration. And, he’s nowhere near the artist Em is, or at least hasn’t proven it yet. Joell Ortiz’s “The Brick” album was dope, and some may consider an underground classic or whatever. But it’s no Marshall Mathers LP, or “The Eminem Show”. Eminem has already proven himself as an artist for over a decade now, he’s made at least 3 albums that are considered classics. None of the niggas in Slaughterhouse have that, and aren’t individually better than Em on the mic, no way. I’m sick of Slaughterhouse/Joke Budden Stans acting like Slaughterhouse is the new Wu-Tang Clan or something…sorry, ain’t happening. They’re a dope group, and a breath of fresh air for hip-hop, sure. But you can’t put them nowhere near legends…those niggas still have alot to prove. And just spittin “flames” on tracks ain’t enough, i wanna hear better material, give me a great album, and then let’s talk.

      3. @Thewucepticon I agree with most of what you said, but I would strongly argue the amount of classics Em has. You can make an argument MMLP is a classic, I would consider it a borderline classic. But that’s the only album I consider a borderline classic by Em. SSLP and ES were both great albums, but don’t think they did enough for hip hop to be considered bl classics or pure classics.

      4. @C Red he’s a good battle rapper. Doubt he’s the best though….Royce himself beat him in their beef…

    6. I agree SH murdered Em on Session One but come on it was 3 versus 1
Being on Shady records will benefit them alot more than a minor

Don’t hate the white boy faggots he’s one of the best to do it and his beats are dope half of the time

No sensible hardcore rap fan who loves Em thinks recovery is a classic
It’s just the ignoramuses who never listened Cuban Links/R Doubt in their entire lives
think Eminem is the best thing since slice bread!
Album is solid and so will be Shouse’s

    7. People have no place calling anything “classic” within the first few years nevermind months of release. That’s silly. Give it time to leave a mark & then you can see if it holds up to the title of classic or not. Everyone has opinion but to label somethings relevance to the culture based on opinion is wrong. Especially within its first two weeks. If they spit then they spit. If you think they don’t then nevermind but it’s impossible to have a body of work that everyone will enjoy from head to toe. Understand music comes from imagination. If someone can create what you imagine then maybe they’ll be the perfect artist. Either that or Professor X is walking around this bitch making records.

      1. Disagree, there is/was some ish, that as soon as you got throught that 1st spin, you knew it was a “Classic”. BPD-1st three, PE 1st three, WU-1st solo joints, ROOTS-you pick, DOOM, SLUM VILLAGE-Vol two, NAS ill/still. Dude I could go on, but I wont.

    8. First time I’ve heard anybody say Em got slaughtered on Session One, I felt like Royce drew the short straw on that one, honestly everything I’ve heard royce on since Bar Exam 3 has been kinda, I dunno, boring

      Crooked
      Joell
      Em
      Royce

    9. SH and Em working together is probably the best thing going on right now in hip hop, and as far as everyone saying Em shouldnt be involved in SH, whatever on that, Em and SH sounded good together on Session one, ya’ll to busy comparing who came across the finish line first like a horse race to notice that the whole song was dope, thats your problem, Em being involved will only benefit them, A few Em guest spots on the record and his production budget to get some Just Blaze, Dr. Dre beats thrown at them……..Whats their to complain about??

      1. Dres productions over rated these days n so is Just blaze, and they’ve individually been udin dopey producers beats without Em like premo, nottz, black milk etc so you can throw that argument out the window, an Em feature would be cool but there’s a couple dozen I’d sooner hear than him startin with Elzhi…

      2. Good For you, thats your opinion, but I’m not throwing mine “Out the Window” because you disagree, lol………Whatever, it is what it is……I’d rather hear the album I described tho

    10. hopefully Eminem will have as little involvement as possible outside of marketin the joint coz he isn’t anywhere close to Royce level when it cones to making albums or even when talkin mic versatility. Street Hops iller than every album Eminems ever made includin his latest I’d even rank his barr exam trilogy above Ems albums n DIC too…Fact is with the exception of Joey everyone in SH is more versatile than Eminem as artists and the only ones who disagree with that are either Eminem stabs or cats unaware of SH indiviusl catalogues…

And when cats say SH killed Em on session one idiots their not talkin 3 vs 1 their sayin individually EVERY member of SH came harder than him, that shit should of been obvious to even the dumbest cats in here

      1. lol, I love how people like you say “……And anyon who doesnt agree with me is just……”

Your opinion aint the word of god homie, alot of people gonna disagree with you, “Street Hop is better then anything Em ever put out”……….lol, no its not, quit playin

I love Em and the group, individually and solo, you just obviously aint feelin Em so your opinion is biased and therefor invalid……..And how you gonna throw dirt at Joey for not being versitile, dude shows more depth on Mood Music 2 then most rappers will in their career

        Just sayin

      2. co-sign on SutterKane’s comments. Dude…like fa real? Joey not versatile? Mood Music? Padded Room? 10 minutes? Stand up nucca? Wow, thats a bold statement right there. You feelin real bulletproof right now, but get in touch with reality. I’m not an Em, at least not since Encore turned me off, but I do recognize that he has skills and he is nuts on the mic when he is in that zone. Get it together maine!!!

      3. lol gtfoh get slaughterhouse dick out ur mouth…listen to all the bad meets evil tracks em always outshined royce

streethop was dope but better then mmlp gtfoh….dickrider

i remember all the slaughterhouse stans were saying slaughterhouse was better then wu tang …gtfoh

      4. @Royce…don’t think Em outshined Royce on BME, think they were about equal most of the time…

    11. ANYBODY THAT THINKS EM IS ABOVE AND BEYOND SLAUGHTERHOUSE, AND WOULD MERK THEM IN A BATTLE OR TRACK. IS A DELUSIONAL STAN! SERIOUSLY OUT OF TOUCH.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE ARE FUCKIN MONSTERS ON A TRACK. EASILY THE BEST IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW……… EVEN EM KNOWS THAT. THATS WHY HE SIGNED THEM.

      1. no disrespect, but….. SMACK YOURSELF!!!!! you cant be serious ( easily the best in the game right now).. dont get me wrong, im a SH and em fan but come on now… to say they’re the best in the game after one good album makes me question your sanity… and your talkin about other people being out of touch????

      2. no disrespect, but….. SMACK YOURSELF!!!!! you cant be serious ( easily the best in the game right now).. dont get me wrong, im a SH and em fan but come on now… to say they’re the best in the game after one good album makes me question your sanity… and your talkin about other people being out of touch??

    12. Em was a better freestyle battling mc than artist to me, back when he was battling MC Juice in the rap olympics. Royce has kind of been spitting similar lyrics for a while now, kind of gets old after a while. Even Royce and Joell has said Crooked I is the best in the group, and should be considered as one of the best MC’s. I agree with that, list to his entry to the Wake Up shows 100k battle Rap or Die, or some of his freestyles for hip hop weekly like Stronger or Blue Print. He has the deepest vocabulary of any, and his metaphors are creative and sick. Dr Dr had him ghostwrite songs for him, like Say Dr Dre for detox. He stood out on the SH album, dropping the sickest bars and is the most unrated rapper. But he needs to get away from the West Coast beats. Let’s just hope label politics don’t screw up his solo album later this year, he’ll kill NY rappers like Cormega, Sean Price, Nino Bless bar for bar.

      1. I do think Crooked is a beast wit the bars, but I still think Joey is the sickest of the group. It didn’t show on the group album though, he got out-shined by Crooked and Ortiz. Overall, I do think once joe goes back to that Mood Musik/Padded Room ish, he would kill the game. But it’s hard to play favorites, cause all of them can go hard on any given track, which I’m sure everyone on here can at least agree on that statement.

      2. Joey is good too. It is good for hip hop they got together. Hopefully they keep putting out tracks. Cause its a blend of four different styles, which is a reason why every one says one’s better than another. It is based on what you like.

      3. I think Ortiz is the best in the group. Prolly the best out period. Then u got a tie between crooked and Joey. If crook was still spittin like that hip hop weekly year then he woulda been the numba one tie with ortiz.

    13. Yo Dr. Dre how’s those techno beats working out for you?

Aftermath/Shady are putting some stale shit out right now. Same sound, same lyrics. And niggas say the south is bad.

Good luck SH but that cartoon, metaphorical battle rap never makes for classic material. Only one MC pulled it off and made real money- LL Cool J.

All the other legends wrote about life’s ills and personal problems. SH is for the kids.

      1. What u talkin bout? 90% of Jay-Z’s best shit was ill wordplay on him rappin bout himself. If u got the lyrics and know when to drop(not like papoose) then you gon be aight. SH will do just fine as long as they only get on hot beats. Joe budden be choosin some wack beats now and then. Em too. Wait till Jay elec say summn.

      2. r u fuckin retarded….that recovery album was fiiiiiiire…..hiphop legends were all about lyrics….come on maaan krs one is one the illest rapppers out n he was about that battling…n it aint always about the money stupid…some emcees actually do it FOR the fans not the exuctives!

    14. Co-sign Preem……….to the words right of my mouth, classics stand the test of time, they make you remember what you were doing when they dropped!!! i would just like to add to your list:

all of BDP albums (and krs 1st solo-return of the boom bap)
hard to earn, daily operation, moment of truth
it takes of nation of millions, fear of a black planet, yo, bumrush the show
      its a big daddy thing
let the rythem hit’em, follow the leader
the sun rises in the east
dah shinin’, enta da stage……..and ofcourse i could go on as well. the word classic gets tossed around all to frequently now days

cant forget illadelphhalflife, lets get free, below the heavens, blackstar, etc.

    15. It is good to hear that Eminem is running his record label. When there is a leader, it is so efficient. Wouldn’t you agree?

    16. fuck all the hate. a slaughterhouse album released on aftermath would be great. like it or not, em knows how to sell records, so his backing is a blessing for the group

    17. Look that fist SH joint was done in a week or two, and it came out soild, the only people problems with the record was it was too lyrical and it didn’t have a really good party track, but still to do it in a short time and still come out hot is still a little beyond believe. And almost evertime you hear a SH track, you hear str8 crazy fire from them, Em is good, but I don’t think he has a beat that fits their flow, dre maybe, but I still think the producers from their should come back in with a few new ones. Hope it all comes thru and also hope they don’f make their first radio single sound too like the other crap singles that’s out, and last hope for this is they make gold within six month period.

      1. This dude said, “Too lyrical” SMMFH, this is the problem with HipHop, dudes can be “Too lyrical”

      2. That’s is the problem with Hip Hop, not lyrical enough, lacks creativity, there’s no heart in the music, their heart is in the wallet and it shows by the quality of music they make

    18. CLASSIC. Think about that word for a sec. Does an album have to go platinum to be classic? Does it need a top 10 single? Does it have to be well received by everyone? Does it even have to be an album? Cuz alotta them albums people define as “classic” pale to Mood Music 2. I think a classic is summn u can bump from intro to outro without missin a beat and feelin every line in its own way. Joey put alotta honesty into that. Thats summn u dont get often. Mood Music 2 >>> Tha Carter 3.

      1. Yea, not sure you’re really saying much by saying it’s better than C3…MM2 was great, but it’s far from a classic. If you think it’s a classic, that means it’s on the same level as Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Takes a Nation, Paid in Full, Illadelph, etc.

      2. its pretty damn close to a classic and so is MM3!!! its close enough and in the times of all the weak music we have i would call it a CLASSIC!! LOL

      3. @ who me?….With todays weak music, All the more reason not to so readily label something a classic, in HIPHOP today, we (HIPHOP masses) hardly know what a classic is anymore, because the music is soooo watered down now.

      4. truroux u dead on with what u said my dude….mm2 and mm3 were both classics…i can put them shits on at anytime n jus let it run!

    19. WELL PUT…MOOD MUSIC IS ONE OF THE DOPEST COLLECTIONS OF THOUGHT…DEPTH…FEEL…AND REALITY…BUDDEN IS TOP TEN fuck what ya’ll heard…

      1. Mood Music 2 is not only my favorite mixtape of all time but it’s up there with my favorite albums

    20. session one went like this

      Joell>eminem>crooked>royce

Fact…..if u dont like go play in traffic

    21. im glad that royce is wanting the group project first that shows what type of person he is he would rather give the fans what they really want first which is a SH album on shady instead of just tryin to get his own shine, THATS A REAL MOVE RIGHT THERE!!!

      1. mood muzik is wat faggots listen to when getting pump, pump, pumped i up thier ass…..

      2. both of u clown ass nikkas needa relaize that joey ATE prodigy the fuck up n joey is a monster…mood muzik is for them dudes who wanna hear some shit other than how much floss u got n how many bitches u “think” you got!….”nevermind me worry about ya medicaid”….”fifty signed the bum jus cuz where he was from put a stamp on em n still nobody feels em….joey “slaughtered” prodigy…more like a mockery ….dummies!

    23. i cant wait for that slaughterhouse to drop on shady records… all four emcees are dope (not the biggest fan of joe buddens, his stans make me not want to listen to his shit) and with em co-signing that album is gonna make some noise….

im a huge music fan and em is in my top ten, ortiz is making his way up there,(drop a damn album already!!), royce ive been checking since death is certain, and crooked and joey are dope emcees in thier own right… stans calm down a little bit.. none of them are the best to touch a mic… they are dope emcees, but there has been a boat load of dope emcees before them and will be a boatload after them…. please just hop off thier dicks a lil bit, im starting to get embarassed to listen to them.. smh

    24. Man ive been cruisin around listenin to Recovery and when I first heard it i didn’t know if I liked it but then I started listening a lil closer and that cd is on fire from 1-17…

    25. Royce ma man. Please note that South Africa is amazed at yalls clique:Slaughter House. Hommie you should come to SA 4 real!!

    26. fuck that……hardest in the group is crooked, then joell, royce can be stale at time like on be3……buddens i dont like him personally but lyrically he can spit but at the same time he definitly the black sheep of the crew
