Rihanna and A$AP Rocky‘s VMAs performance made waves after the rapper grabbed his peer’s butt live on stage, and she has now reflected on the moment that seemed to spark their current romance.

Back in 2012, the pair performed Rih’s “Cockiness (Remix)” at the annual gathering, and while it was the first time the public ever saw them together, it was apparently also the first time they’d ever met. Though they didn’t date for around seven more years, that intimate moment gave the superstar singer’s team a clue that there was something brewing.

“So that was the day that we thought we met,” she explained in her new cover story for Interview Magazine, published on Tuesday (April 9). “At rehearsal, so it was, like, manager to manager, client to client. So when he grabbed my ass that night, everybody thought I was about to … My team was worried that I wanted to have his head on a fucking mantle.

“But I was like,’Ah, nah.’ That’s why everybody was like, ‘Oh my god. She likes him.'”

Months later, the pair got cozy in Rocky’s video for “Fashion Killa,” though the “Umbrella” hitmaker confirmed during the same chat that they were definitely not dating at the time.

Fast forward to 2024 and the pair now have two kids together.

At the Bottega Veneta fashion show during Milan Fashion Week in February, A$AP Rocky showed off his unique way of honoring his family.

While on the red carpet, he rocked a custom ring that featured the birthstones of his entire family. The piece, which was designed by Popular Jewelry, is dubbed the Quadruple R ring as it represents him (real name Rakim Mayers) and Rihanna (real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty) as well as and their children, RZA and Riot.

After revealing her baby bump during her 2023 Super Bowl Halftime performance last February, Rihanna gave birth to her second child on August 3, 2023 in Los Angeles.

The pair kept their first son’s name a secret for nearly a year. Just ahead of his first birthday, his Wu-Tang Clan-inspired name was revealed. RZA was born on May 13, 2022 and will soon be celebrating his second birthday.
