Q-Tip Recalls “Competing” With Dr. Dre On “Low End Theory”

Over the course of several years, Dr. Dre and Q-Tip have, in several interviews, provided a timeline of back-and-forth inspiration beginning in the late ’80s.

Q-Tip has stated that NWA’s 1988 release Straight Outta Compton was a direct influence on A Tribe Called Quest’s 1991 album The Low End Theory. In turn, Dre revealed that Tribe’s project greatly inspired the Compton rapper/producer’s 1992 classic, The Chronic

In a recent interview on Shade 45’s “All Out Show,” Q-Tip spoke to Rude Jude and Lord Sear about the nature of his drawing inspiration from Dre for The Low End Theory. “Everybody deals with shit in a competitive way. But not in like an egregious way, how shit looks a little bit today,” explained Tip. “But more like one-upsmanship in the music. Tryin’ to stay fresh…just keeping your eye on that dude. And for me, personally, when I went in, that dude was Dre.”

“The group was NWA, and to me, that was the benchmark. And of course I was listening to everything else around…”

“The bar was set very high,” continued the ATCQ member. “Musically, my main thing was Dre. That was like, trying to make something he would like and appreciate in a way. Musically.”

    1. DR. DRE is still the benchmark, in hip-hop music production. especially, his mixdowns.

professional mix engineers, rate DR. DRE.

    2. KISS THE RING!!!!!

    3. Q-tip is just another washed up old has-been. Lil Wayne has the best mixes – hands down – Dre is over-rated and sets his snares too loud whereas the stuff on Wayne’s album is perfect.

      1. ^^^^Give us one good answer as to why Wayne has the best mixes last time I checked The Chronic and Low End Theory were hip hop classics and I dont see Wayne has a classic record just my opinion

      2. hahahahah carter 2 a classic ?, its just a good album, The Documentary, Be and Late Registration those were classic albums in ’05

    4. Q-Tip is a great rapper and a definitely original and dope producer! Much props to the pioneers, to those wo dropped classic albums like Tip & Dre.

    5. Great interview and it just confirms what I’ve been saying for the past 10 yrs….there is not bar (or benchmark) in rap or hip-hop these days because most of the artist these days are not creating classic albums. I’m an old school dude so I know the importance of respecting and appreciating the music before my time because each generation is influenced by the prior generation. And the past decade has been 10 yrs. of one hit blunders.

When the younger generation learn how to create classic albums and comprehend that art requires originality, then they will start creating classic albums. Now let’s talk about the word “Art”, where the word “Artist” derives from. Just imagine going to a museum and every artist material looked the same (because a painting, sculpture is created by an artist)…that’s not art. So are all of these artist using the same beat and most of them are rhyming the same. Another important fact to ponder, the older generation (say between the ages of 27-50) were never mass buyers of singles because there was not iTunes, Amazon, etc. It would be wise for the music industry to start signing artist that are original (lyrically and musically) in order to target the older demographic, because our generation own businesses, houses, and we have money, but we refuse to buy singles in mass quantity because our generation is used to listening and buying “Classic” music. But it’ll never happen because technology has people (dumbed down and) thinking in the moment.

Big ups to ATCQ and Dr. Dre for creating classic material and respecting the artform.

      1. i doubt you’ll ever see any album that comes from a generation younger than you as a classic unless it sounds like the music you grew up listening to

    6. Detox will never come out coz Dre is having a great challenge coming up with a single bigger than ‘Still Dre’…that’s his stumbling block right now, and they using his focus on ‘Beats By Dre’ as an excuse

he must just be honest, and say i can’t come up with a single effective enough to make a global impact…ITS A STUMBLING BLOCK, WE KNOW DRE

    7. Been listening to both since they came out and Tribe and Dre sound nothing like each other. Like someone else said Q-tip must be trying to get on detox or something..

    9. Tip on something. Benchmarks.

That’s the problem with the rap game today. Instead of trying to beat the next rapper or producers coming up with a new sound.

Everybody just starts biting the hottest thing out.

The albums they are talking about sound nothing alike. But by staying in their own lanes they wanted to raise their music to that level.
