In a new interview with MP3.com, iconic artist and producer Prince Paul expounds about his long-rumored album production with Souls of Mischief. “I’m doing this Souls of Mischief record,” confirmed the Long Island, New York producer, responsible for De La Soul‘s first three albums. “OK, I’m going
to break out the SP-12 and the ASR and the MPC and, you know, I’ll
record part of it on the computer. Because computers are so easy to
record, you know. But then, OK, I want to dust it out. So I’ll mix it
down on quarter-inch tape, or, you know, then I’ll take it and put it
on DAT, you know. Whatever type of vibe I’m trying to get, you know,
off that project, is where I go.”
Few active Hip Hop producers understand traditional recording methods better than Prince Paul. As a deejay and then-fledging producer, Paul‘s career began with Brooklyn Hip Hop band Stetsasonic, who released three albums, as early as 1986. “I love the older stuff, because it’s more hands-on and
it’s catered to your feel and, you know, and a lot of times great music
is made by mistake. So you’re more apt to make mistakes on the older
equipment, than the computer,” Paul added.
As part of his bi-coastal project with Souls of Mischief, Paul added that he has been trying to work with Del The Funky Homosapien [click to read], the pioneer for Heiro Emporium, the label that Souls of Mischief is signed to, as well as Casual.
Prince Paul recently released Baby Loves Hip Hop, a children’s Hip Hop album, as well as his Funk group Baby Elephant.
