Pete Rock Says Kanye West/Jay-Z Collabo ‘The Joy’ Was Made In ’97

The last of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays continue to hit the web, most garnering favorable reviews from listeners. His recent Jay-Z collaboration “The Joy” featured Pete Rock on the production boards, in what was a soulful sample of Curtis Mayfield’s “Makings of You.”

“First I want to say ‘rest in peace’ to Curtis Mayfield,” Pete Rock told Vibe. “To reuse something that inspired us as kids–a song that my mom and dad listened to almost every other day is a great feeling.”

Rock revealed on Thursday that he produced “The Joy” almost fourteen years ago. “I had to bring that back and reintroduce it to the young generation. I want to say big-up to Kanye West and Jay-Z for getting on that beat. I actually had that beat since 1997. I’ve been sitting on it for years.”

“The Joy” will not appear on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which releases on Nov. 22, but Pete Rock did express his hopes to work with Kanye again in the future.

    1. man,,,,don’t these dudes lose beats 14 years,,,,i suppose dudes change pc’s n external harddrives every 6 months,,,,the track is an ill one,,,,is nice on the ears n ye n jay do tha damn thing

      1. to be honest i find it hard to believe that the beat is from 97…ive been listening to pete rocks compilation albums and production credits for forever and that wasnt even close to is style back then not even close…you guys should look up his stuff on google and then listen for yourselves…if i remember correctly j dilla was the first with that style of bass and drums…and he didnt show his until 2003. as dope as pete rock is i find it sad that he is claiming that beat is tat old. if it was there is no way it wouldnt have gotten shopped to someone or released on petes on albums

      2. ^^^You’re an idiot, a dip shit, and an asshole. So I suppose you know Pete Rock personally then and was there with him in his studio when he was putting countless hours into making beats? As a producer (with 10 years experience) I can tell you that not every beat in your catalog gets placed. And there are cases when a beat of mine or any other producer is actually way ahead of its time. So shut the f*ck up and stop hating on PR. Get a life, dumbass.

    2. Crazy track. ‘Ye is a fool for not including that on the album…I know it doesnt sonically mesh with the rest of the album but him and Jay never sound better than when they spit over vintage, soulful producto. Synth beats with no samples sound hollow as fuck to me.

    3. I don’t know how that song wasnt on Kanyes new shit, but regardless its a dope ass song, One Of the Best from G.O.O.D. Fridays.
