Method Man and Lil Yachty are just a few of the familiar faces that have appeared in the trailer for the new coming-of-age rap film On The Come Up.
Based on Angie Thomas’ best-selling book of the same name, the Sanaa Lathan-directed film follows 16-year-old Bri as she strives to become one of the greatest rappers of all time against all odds. Inspired by the legacy of her father – a local rap legend whose life and career was cut short by gang violence –Bri will fight to keep her family together and make a name for herself. The film will also be the directorial debut from the Emmy-award-winning actress, who co-stars in the film.
Dave star GaTa (real name Davionte Ganter) will also appear in the film alongside Mike Epps, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jamila C. Gray and more.
This is far from the first time Lil Yachty and Method Man have stepped in front of the camera. Meth currently stars in 50 Cent’s Power Book II: Ghost and previously in EPIX’s Godfather of Harlem. As for Lil Boat, he starred in How High 2 alongside DC Young Fly, replacing the film’s original stars Method Man and Redman, with Mike Epps also in the cast as well.
“I congratulate DC Young Fly and Lil Yachty,” Redman told HipHopDX once word spread he and Meth wouldn’t be involved in the film. “I know they’re gonna do a great job. They better. And this is just another outlet for them to feed their family like Red and Meth feed their family. I’m about the youth. I’m about the youth growing at the end of the day. And when one door closes, you know what God say, another one opens.”
On the Come Up will premiere on Paramount + starting Friday, September 23 in the U.S., Canada and Italy.

“Method Man and Lil Yach-“ Ahhh, my eyes! A mumble rapper and a real hip hop artist should not be in the same sentence, let alone, same movie together! Thanks a lot, gotta bleach my eyes out now.
