George Floyd Verdict: Derek Chauvin Found Guilty On All 3 Counts

The nation held its collective breath for what felt like an eternity on Tuesday (April 20) waiting on the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police Department officer responsible for George Floyd’s death last May.

Chauvin was facing charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, ultimately killing him.

According to CNN, Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

George Floyd’s life was unjustly snuffed out on May 25, 2020 outside of Cup Foods in the Twin Cities. Last June, attorneys for the Floyd family revealed the 46-year-old man died of asphyxia from neck and back compression.

“George died because he needed a breath,” civil rights attorney Ben Crump said during a press conference at the time. “I implore all of us to take a breath for justice, to take a breath for peace, to take a breath for our country and to take a breath for George.”

The independent autopsy was performed by renowned forensic medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden who, along with colleague Dr. Allecia Wilson, found the manner of Floyd’s death to be a homicide.

“[They found] Mr. Floyd’s death was homicide caused by asphyxia caused by neck and back compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain,” the report reads in part. “Sustained pressure on the right side of Mr. Floyd’s carotid artery impeded blood flow to the brain, and weight on his back impeded his ability to breathe.

“The independent examiners found that weight on the back, handcuffs and positioning were contributory factors because they impaired the ability of Mr. Floyd’s diaphragm to function. From all the evidence, the doctor said it now appears Mr. Floyd died at the scene.”

Floyd’s death sparked outrage across the globe, with hundreds of protests erupting all over the United States — despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Floyd is just one of many Black people killed by white police officers and this historic case is a rare example of how the justice system can actually work for the African-American community.

      1. LOL! But you love us Black folks. You love our music and I know deep inside of your white soul that you want to be Black. You hate us so much, yet you can not keep off this BLACK Culture website. When racist people like you post negative comments on a BLACK platform, it make us BLACK folks feel powerful. So anyway, thanks for the comment.

    1. Floyd died of a drug overdose. The Burn Loot Murder crew will still be working overtime to identify their next opportunity, most likely not too long before the 2024 erection I mean election.

      1. Damn too bad you weren’t one of the two the two coroners with 6+ years of college education and 15+ years of experience working in the field. You just fuck your cousin and live with your meth head moms. Deep.

    2. White supremacy. George floyd was a practice of white supremacy promoting drug addiction and keeping pregnant women under gunpoint as cool. All a plot by the white man.

    3. that officer with his knee on floyd’s neck looked like a man possessed. okay so black lives matter but it is still the media which is stirring the pot of shit.

    4. Moral of the story kids… Use minors to commit crimes for you, be a junky pusher. Do a home invasion, pistol whip a pregnant woman and point a gun at her stomach. Later in life, after being released from prison, try to pass counterfeit bills using kids help. Get caught, BTW you’re on a cocktail of drugs when caught, and resist arrest. Somehow you die a hero if the cops kill you? Congrats. This is the world our youth has created.

      1. If he were white, and this happens tons more times a day to either folk than POC, simply due to the populous difference, no one would care. Yaaay! If he were a Latino no one would care either. Now blavk or a J?

      2. I figured these comments were gonna be stupid, but damn, dog. The consensus isn’t that George was a hero or even a good guy necessarily. It’s that he was unjustly murdered in the street. Shut your dumb ass up, ho.

    5. Wait a second. That mural above reads “I can breathe now” but people are in an uproar over the Raiders tweet of “I can breathe”? Y’all got your shit ass backwards.

    6. Why does everybody have to pick sides? It seems likely that Floyd and the officer were both at fault. Floyd was high, ODing and resisting arrest, and the cop also used excessive force that hastened his demise. You don’t need to pick a side, just be rational. Life is almost always more complicated than picking sides, and both sides of the media were hugely irresponsible with their coverage of this incident and the ensuing chaos.

    7. When that White Female Cop killed the black man in Texas claiming his door was open and thinking it was her so called apartment. She got what 3 years??? Being found guilty doesn’t mean anything in the eyes of the law.
