O.T. Genasis On His Artistry: I “Stick To My Guns”

After telling Noisey back in October that he has a “strategic plan” to transcend his breakout hit “CoCo,” O.T. Genasis recently spoke with HipHopDX and explained how he’s taking advantage of his current success while maintaining a general apprehension of the music industry.

“As crazy as it sounds, I don’t buy into this artist shit,” O.T. Genasis said in a clip that premiered as a part of today’s DX Daily. “It’s kind of like the only way for me to be there is to act like I have nothing or act like I’m still hustling. I gotta be in that mode. I can’t buy into that shit because the second that I do, that’s when everything is gon’ change. I might fuck up then. So I don’t buy into that or any of this industry shit that everybody talking about or anything like that. I just stay out here and stick to my guns and then I know that this could be taken from me at any day. First thing to do is capture it man and take advantage, take advantage of all of this. I don’t feel too Hollywood or anything. Sometimes it’s a bitter sweet thing because it comes back to bite.”

Late last month, Genasis’ label boss and industry mentor Busta Rhymes thanked fans for their support of the “CoCo” single.

“I want to thank every single DJ from the clubs to the radio,” Busta wrote. “Every radio station, program director, every radio personality, every blogger, every website, every media outlet, all of television and last but not lest EVERY SINGLE FAN for the love and the support that you all have given us by becoming such a strong and collective support system in helping us give to you our new incredible artist O.T.
