Burgeoning North Carolina rapper Box Carlito is reportedly one of two homicide victims who were shot and killed in Raleigh this week.

According to ABC 11 Raleigh, the shooting took place on Wednesday (September 4) in the 2700 block of Community Drive just after 1 p.m. local time.

The 28-year-old artist, real name Vincente Arocho, was declared dead at the scene, while 31-year-old Jaquan Tyrone Dumas was taken to WakeMed where he died from his injuries.

Box Carlito made headlines in 2018 after he posted a $2.5 million bond to get out of jail for a marijuana charge. In a YouTube video, he talked about why he believes the system is set up for people to fail.

“What I want to say about this bond is this, $2.5 million bond all for a marijuana charge, not a high level marijuana charge, a G-class felony which is a low felony,” he said. “My bond should’ve been only $80,000, instead it was $2.5 million and I had to stay in there for six months.

“I had to show all my tax returns, I had to put up all my property, I had to show everything just to get put of jail.”

An investigation into the double homicide is underway.

    1. I don’t know as much as I would like to know about this particular case. What I do know is that it doesn’t make sense for anyone to have to pay a bond as high as he did for marijuana since marijuana is legal in many states now.

Thus, his claim that the drug laws are just to keep people down seems well-founded. When we look at the data, most people in prison/jail are non-white and there for drug-related charges. This costs tax payers trillions of dollars every year as well as works to destroy and keep down the incarcerated and their families.

How this related to Carlitos being gunned down is something I don’t know. Was he more deeply involved in dealing marijuana than he himself indicates? He doesn’t present himself like a dealer. Dealers do well to present to a very tough and dangerous image so people don’t mess with them. He just seems like an average guy to me. But even if he was, and again I don’t think he was, so what? As he points out the criminal system is rigged to keep the poorest people, especially people of color, down.

And the way it’s set up, society can even say that it is the fault of the person, not because they are poor, but because they consumed drugs which are forbidden in our culture. But it’s really just a trap.

Prohibition of drugs doesn’t stop the consumption of drugs. What it does is only increase the dangerous consumption and the crime and profit associated with the drug. What the US saw with alcohol in the 1920s is the common pattern for any prohibited drug. The difference is that the crime we see for drugs happens partly in the US, and almost exclusively to the already marginalized (again based on race and income), and also to the people of Mexico where drug cartels actually own the government to the point that it probably wouldn’t mean anything to even legalize drugs in Mexcio. But ending the not just pointless but harmful War on Drugs, that kills by OD and murder several thousand people a year in the Americas, would save money and lives.

People just need to get over the fact that they don’t want someone to smoke marijuana or even do heroin. It’s a choice and people can live useful laws as long as the drugs aren’t illegal and consumption makes them a criminal.

      1. He was originally caught with a lb. after eluding the police on a high speed chase. police later found 23 lbs at a house that was alledgedly his. That’s why the bond was high like that. Anything of that magnitude includes the feds. You know he wasn’t just a regular guy. Big shine, lots of weight, not average at all too me. He took a pleaI’m sure dude was real deal in terms of being the plug. Some sites are saying he was shot 25 times. The system is rigged once you get involved in it but it’s not the end of life. It’s harder but everyone has their test.
