NLE Choppa isn’t here for the Drake criticism, even if it comes from Yasiin Bey.
The Memphis rapper responded to Bey’s claim that Drizzy’s music is “pop” and “compatible with shopping” with strong words. The response came via a comment on an Instagram post by Akademiks.
“They hate on this man so much it’s ridiculous,” Choppa wrote of Drake. “Dude catalog more than respectable. He like the [Kool-Aid] man different flavors for each day of the month.”
“[Bey] don’t know what he talking about !” Choppa concluded. You can see the post below.
Yasiin Bey’s comments came from a Patreon-exclusive interview with The Cutting Room Floor that went live on Wednesday (January 10). In it, the Brooklyn MC discussed modern rap and the person at its forefront.
“Drake is pop to me,” he told host Recho Omondi. “In the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song, it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping. Or shopping with an edge, in certain instances.”
Though Bey did refer to the Canadian superstar’s music as “likeable,” he and Omondi had fun joking around about the idea of music that is an ideal backdrop for commerce.
“I love this mall!” Bey laughingly exclaimed. “They have everything here. This is the new Drake — you hear it?”
Turning serious, the rapper formerly known as Mos Def suggested that music for shopping may not be relevant during “the collapse of empire.”
“Are we not in some early stage of that at this present hour?” he asked. “Buying and selling — where’s the message that I can use? What’s in it for your audience?”
When not defending Drake, NLE Choppa has been busy beefing with Blueface lately.
The problems started when the “Thotiana” rapper threw shade at Choppa on the remix to his fiancée Jaidyn Alexis’ viral song, “Barbie,” on which he also namedropped Offset, Cardi B and Soulja Boy.
In response, the 21-year-old called out the Southern California MC in a since-deleted post on Twitter, writing: “I hit you personally to stop speaking on me I thought shit was understood. Bet that.”
Blueface fired back by calling NLE a “Muslim vegan” and claiming responsibility for his career, saying: “N-ggas rap about my wesydes all year long and mad when I rap about his. She decided to indulge in the circus on her own free recognizance she entered the chat nobody safe.
“I’m not worried about a Muslim vegan cryp on sY bet that small fry… squabble up or shut up.”
The two artists proceeded to attempt to set up a boxing match, though efforts seem to have collapsed among mutual recriminations.
I guess dude doesn’t know Blackstar
It seems like nobody can have an opinion these days. Why some brothers have to act like bitches these days. Yasiin entitled to his opinion. Suck it up and move on.
Exactly. Any opinion opposite of that “sheep” talk is hate. Sidebar: Why TF does EVERY “article” on this site SOMEHOW have to include Blueface?!?! Wtf is that about? From yaslin to drake to nle to BLUEFACE?!?! Who dafuq is they paying to be in EVERY POST LOL?!?!
Truth stay hurting.
Drake is simp music, nothing “hard” about it at all. Doesn’t write his own lyrics, mediocre singing, mediocre rapping yet somehow people think this adds up to an A+. He’s a meme rapper. Whenever this is said his fans start crying numbers. Yes he’s mega successful in an age where double clicking songs counts as a sale and popularity is heavily influenced by meme potential. But the truth is that a lot of these rappers are successful because of easy access, same as McDonalds. If you had to go out and actually buy their music then it would be a different story. Feel free to disagree with that assessment but numbers are irrelevant when discussing artistic merit and craft anyway.
I’ve been saying for years that Drake’s music sounds like it was tailor made for 15yo yt girls.
“what’s in it for your audience besides the banging of the pom poms?” Ouch… He’s not wrong though in that it’s “likable”. My little nieces are very excited for his concert, unfortunately mom has to drive because they don’t have license’s yet….
