NLE Choppa Blasts ‘Lame’ Mike Jones Over ‘Still Tippin’ Sample Dispute

NLE Choppa has taken aim at Mike Jones over a sample dispute relating to “Still Tippin,'” calling the Texas rap legend “lame.”

The Memphis rapper dropped a new song on Friday (October 27) called “Cmon Freestyle,” which samples Jones’ classic 2004 song.

However, Mike Jones claimed that he never gave NLE Choppa permission to use “Still Tippin’.”

“Don’t care about getting respect especially if the respect wasn’t shown 4 months ago prior to releasing the music without getting the business clear!” he wrote in an Instagram comment. “I told y’all #Welcome2TheMusicBusiness #StayTuned For Receipts & I wish a N-GGA Would.”

In response, NLE Choppa took to X to accuse Jones of “trying to copyright a song he got cleared.”

“Ion know if it’s Mike Jones or his team but on everything y’all dead wrong for trying to copyright a song I got cleared,” he wrote. “That’s some hating shit especially for a young n-gga like me that’s just tryna please his fans. Ion feel that I lost dumb respect but it’s cool fasho.

“This man lame for that. I’m partnered with a major label! They not even going to release a song if it ain’t CLEARED. If that was the case you would’ve sued instead of copyrightng! Anybody can make a COPYRIGHT CLAIM! That don’t mean the record ain’t cleared. Broke activities.”

Choppa also claimed that Mike Jones doesn’t even own the rights to the original song.

NLE Choppa performed “Cmon Freestyle” for 4 Shooters Only‘s YouTube series From the Block, but the performance has since been taken down, with the video “no longer available due to a copyright claim by Warner Chappell.”

Mike Jones posted a screenshot of the takedown to his Instagram page with the caption: “STANDING ON BUSINESS.”

Jones also shared a screenshot of an email from July 5 that stated NLE Choppa’s intentions to use the sample, but that they wouldn’t approve the request until a resolution was reached.

“Hi all, I received a new request to clear a Mike Jones interpolation/sample for a new NLE Choppa song coming out soon via Warner,” the email read.

“I informed Mike’s publisher (Warner Chappell) that we are unable to approve any new requests until we can reach a global resolution with you regarding all the issues currently at-hand regarding Mike Jones. Please advise. Reserving all rights. Thanks.”

Despite the dispute, NLE Choppa continued to promote the video on his Instagram Stories, writing: “Better than original.”

Mike Jones responded on his own Stories: “Let’s see what the #s say then its Business Nothing Personal.”

“Cmon Freestyle” was released as part of NLE Choppa’s new album Cottonwood (Deluxe 2.0), which clocks in at a lenghthy 40 tracks.

    1. NLE is flavor of the month punk and nobody will remember anything he did 2 years from now. He’s basically the next Rich Boy

    3. its a 2004 song my guy should you want the new song to blow up so they can find the OG version? They sue for the money? dumb move.

      1. The song already did numbers. That’s why he has to pay to use it. That’s the whole point of having copyrighted material. Dude probably made a bigger mess of the song anyway…

    4. 1. Can we stop labeling a written song with a video as a “freestyle”. None of these guys are coming off the top with it. When you have a music video for a “freestyle” it’s not a freestyle. 2. Maybe it’s because I’m not from Houston, but is Mike Jones really considered a “legend”? Aside from “still tippin” can anyone list 1 other song from him without having to look it up?

      1. Back Then was hotter than Tipping so that’s another song Back then they didn’t want now I’m hot they all on me, everybody still using that line and the song like 20 years old. I don’t know If I would consider Mike Jones a legend or not but he made his mark and had a impact in hip hop.

      2. Boy stop ain’t no fucking you saying this troll crap my ninja ya gots to be new new to hip hop Ayo news Flash Mike Jones music still bang go slap off til this day
Now Chop Suey fool on the other hand on me idk can’t remember one damn line 💯%

    5. It’s crazy you want to use someone else work but then disrespect them when it doesn’t go your way because you, your management or label didn’t fully handle business on your end. I don’t blame Mike for doing what he did. You think he should just allow everybody to use his work without compensating him. But shout out to Mike Jones for having his business intact enough to were you can’t use his work without him clearing it.

    6. How do you like someones work so much you want to use it but then turn around and disrespect them because you, your label or management didn’t take care of business. Shout out to Mike Jones for having his business intact enough to where he has to clear his old work for it to be used. The logic some people use is so crazy, let’s see someone use some of NLE older stuff and make money off it without him financially benefiting from it and see how he feels.
