Mr. Vegas Calls Drake “Fake” For Not Crediting Popcaan & Beenie Man On “VIEWS”

Mr. Vegas called into Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning Monday (May 16) to clarify a statement he made on Facebook earlier this week calling Drake “fake” for not properly crediting Dancehall artists on VIEWS.

The Kingston, Jamaica-bred musician makes it clear that he doesn’t appreciate Drizzy turning Beenie Man into what he labels as an “intro artist” or “hype man” after sampling The King of Dancehall’s “Tear Off Mi Garment” on “Controlla” and for taking Popcaan off the same track much to the dismay of fans. Drake also sampled Popcaan’s “Luh Yuh Bad” on “Too Good” which features the biggest Bajan singer you know, Rihanna.

“Why did Drake link Beenie Man to on sing back that record if that’s the one he wanted? Or why let Beenie Man do something new?” Mr. Vegas asks during his Facebook Live broadcast on Monday (May 16). “So then I’m listening to the record further and at the end of the record when the record done, you can hear the record fin, Beenie Man doing the outro. So I’m like, Drake is rampaning my artists. You using my artists as intro men.”

Mr. Vegas admits during his interview with Ebro that he wishes Drake would have just visibly credited who was featured on the song, even though some of the reggae artists are named in the credits for VIEWS.

“On the records that Jamaican artists are sampled, no one even sees their names,” he says. “If you were really into the culture and into the artists, at least you would have put some respeck on [their] names on the album.”

“One Dance” is the only Dancehall-esque cut on VIEWS that visibly credited the artists sampled on the record, Nigerian musician WizKid and British singer Kyla.

“When a Drake or a Rihanna or anyone who has a big machine behind them, a Justin Bieber, make a dancehall record it goes to the top,” Vegas continues. “When a dancehall record is from Jamaica and we take it to other markets outside of New York, Hartford and maybe Miami, we have a problem to get it on. If you are going to come to this culture put on properly and give them an opportunity to create a name for themselves outside of their base market. What is so wrong with giving someone proper crediting?”

Mr. Vegas’ Hot97 interview and Facebook Live broadcast are below.

    1. @Meh KRS-One WROTE his own songs and had a Jamaican accent on few of his songs. Drake has Jamaican ghost-writers and uses Jamaican samples without giving CREDIT to them. Its pretty obvious Drake fans are stuck on stupid and can’t think rationally.

      1. I know, Drake fans are usually bored with the truth. Unfortunately for you, the fakes haven’t taken over culture just yet so we’ll keep exposing u

    2. You wouldn’t have enough room in the album credits to cite every artist involved in a Drake release. There are literally way too many people involved in helping Drake create his albums. It would be impossible.

    3. Actually I prefer the Popcaan version so I don’t know why he left it off and it would have been a huge huge break for Popcaan if it was kept. He has paid dues for a minute but still kind of bubblin under.

    4. Drake is a cultural appropriator. He’s a suburban Canadian who raps in a fake black American accent (with slang and n word), and is always shouting out places like houston as if he’s from there. Now he’s trying to dick ride Jamaicans and make watered down versions of their shit without crediting or respecting them. Unfortunately a lot of black people from places like Canada don’t have much of a culture or identity of their own, so they tend to idolize what they see as the dominant black cultures. I’m not impressed

      1. young black people from canada are usually second generation immigrants, mostly from the carribean. we inherited our parents culture but hip-hop was the common denominator for all of us. drake’s dancehall influence comes from the streets of toronto. in toronto, street culture is widely informed by west indian culture, just like the city of montreal has a very strong haitian influence. drake is by no means a representation of a regular black kid from canada, at least not where i’m from. he’s just a pop artist who has figured out how to use different musical currents to his advantage.

      2. get out of town dude: canadian blacks are mostly immigrants that all come from thick cultural roots from the Caribbean. One could argue Black Americans actually appropriate Jamaican culture as that is the core basis of hiphop from DJing, etc. It is well-known hiphop was born from New York Caribbeans and most of the innovators have Jamaican/West Indian roots – Kool Herc, Afrika Bambatta, Melle mel. At any rate, the whole cultural appropriation arguement is a joke. Its like saying smif n wesson stole reggae records for “Sound Bwoy Burriel” or Krs-One for “Bridge is Over” which uses Jamaica. patio, Kanye West stole french music by using Daft Punk or Wu-Tang stole Italian culture for “wu-gambinos” or chinese/asian culture for “shaolin” teachings and “kung-fu” flicks. How about how Nicki Minaj uses a British Accent on Monster? Culture vulture? Of all the anti-Drake arguements, this is the most laughable. Just admit you dont like Drake becuase he is too clean-cut and good-looking.

    5. yeah. Sure Drake is fake and. a cultural appropriator? Then, I guess Krs-One is a cultural appropriator of Jamaican culture also as he used Jamaican slang throughout his career. In fact, the entire basis of hiphop originates for Jamaican soundclash and dancehall so hiphop in general has been appropriate Jamaican culture for years. How about how Run DMC appropriated rock n’ roll? The whole arguement is absurd and nothing new for hiphop. Just another attack on Drake cuz he run tings. Lets be real: If Drake was 3 shades darker, this cultural approproiator arguement wouldnt exist. This racism cuz Drake is light-skin. Be real

      1. Rock n Roll? The same genre created by black people and appropriated by whites? Oh okay…let’s learn our musical history before we start spewing out things that aren’t true buddy.

      2. Exactly !..the list is endless, countless rappers impersonate Spanish/Mexican cartel theme on their records ,complete with mariachi guitars and all , is young Jezzy a culture vulture for claiming to be El Jeffe?!!
These same dance hall cats tried to discredit shaggy and Sean Paul when the were popping ..

      4. Drake stans typing paragraphs, lol. Like Peter Griffin said “You can’t spell overreacting without ovary.”

    6. Considering like 700 people write the material and produce for an album for the “Drake” character, yeah they may miss a few credits.

    7. Drake should die in a plane crash and his dumb fans should get burned alive. What a waste of existence…

    8. Check out the Black imbecile below me with the name CHUCK BERRY ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE. Talking about white people appropriating Rock n Roll. You know how much sh** black people are appropriating from White people? You want me to make a f***** list? BTW Chuck Berry is NOT dead. You dont know sh** about History and you tell other people to learn their history. Typical black dumb ass

    9. Mr. Vegas fails to see is how the “information age” has changed the marketing and strategies of, for, and within the music and entertainment industry. The marketplace is oversaturated with copywriters trying to push information down your throat 25/369. Customers want to feel like they found what they happened to like. That a genuine feeling. Drake is promoting Beenie by creating interest. And it’s interest that pays. The borrower is slave to the owner with interest.
