After doing several roles on such shows as Law and Order and NYPD Blue, Mos Def has continued his growing career in acting as well as music and is currently starring on Broadway in the hit play ‘Topdog/Underdog’ with Jeffrey Wright. In the play, Mos Def plays Booth, a small-time hustler from a broken home who can’t seem to get along with his seemingly hapless brother, Lincoln portrayed by Jeffrey. The play was recently nominated for two Tony Awards in the category of Best Play and Best Lead Role for Jeffrey Wright. Mos Def replaces Don Cheadle who starred in the first run of the play.
Mos will also be getting more time on the big screen with a small part in Robert DeNiro’s Showtime, and as a cab driver who dreams of being a rapper in the romantic comedy “Brown Sugar”, along side Method Man, Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs. On the music side of his career Mos is in the studio working on his debut album with his rock group BlackJack Johnson, but his on solo album has been put on hold by his label, Rawkus due to project disagreements. “I’ll sum it up. Slavery is over and it’s been over so long”, Mos said when asked about the disagreement. The Tony Awards can be seen on CBS on June 2, while ‘Brown Sugar’ hits theatres later this year.
