Hoping to film the debut video from their new album in their hometown of Michigan City, Indiana, Donald Robinson Jr. and Brandon Daniel also known as Midwikid, had to cancel their scheduled shoot since the city said they didn’t have the proper permits. Although people in the area of Spring Street knew about the planned block party event, city officials had only been made aware of it by reading the city’s newspaper. “Normal procedures are that you have to appear before the Board of Works before you close a street”, Police Chief Gene Simmons said to the News-Dispatch. “We, being a police department, didn’t have time to put together proper security for this even. Under normal circumstances we would welcome such a group coming into our community and filming”.
After the shoot was canceled the Mayor’s office received letters and phone calls from upset people in the community. Mayor Sheila Brillson said she must stress this decision was not a racially motivated one. “If we had advance notice, we would have been glad to help. We’re just trying to make sure we follow the process so everything turns out OK”. Before the scheduled block party scene in Michigan City, the group had filmed several scenes in Chicago. Robinson, who believed they had the city’s approval to film the video, said they would shoot the remaining scenes in Chicago. Midwikid debut album ‘Something Wikid This Way Comes”, will be released July 23 on Divine Mills Records.
