Meek Mill Recalls Going To Jail At 18 Years Old

Meek Mill just released his debut album Dreams and Nightmares. But the way the young rapper tells it, his life could’ve gone in a completely different direction.

“I was 18, just turned [into] an adult when I went to jail,” he said, explaining the event that completely changed his life in MTV’s “This is How I Made It.” “I caught a case and had 57 charges. Young guys that get caught with a gun — they’re gonna automatically charge you up. All I did was walk outside with a gun.”

Meek’s time in jail made it clear to the Philadelphia emcee: he needed to change his direction in life. “In jail you ain’t got nothing to do but sit in there and think all day.”

Meek explained how his time in prison helped develop his dedication to making music. “I just [didn’t] wanna die, I [didn’t] wanna get shot or get life in jail because that’s the usual script. I ended up going about 20-something months and realized that wasn’t the place I wanted to be.”

“I really put my life into rapping,” he added. “They let me out on house arrest and the judge gave me permission to go to the studio, and that taught me another lesson because every day [I was] going straight to the studio for 12 hours straight and I started putting up six songs a day for three months straight — that’s what gave me my little jump start.”

    1. why does he keep talking bout going to prison all these dudes who spent a little while locked up think they made men and shit fucking clowns

    2. I can appreciate not wanting to live a certain life after leaving jail. But then he comes out and raps about living that life. Come on, dude.

      1. um yeah because that’s what he lived.. that’s what he can maainly relate to, shithead. he ain’t gonna rap bout goin to church or gettin a GED

    3. at the dude below me, he raps about what he knows about nothing more nothing less, if u can relate turn up if not dont listen!!! but never judge a dude who made it out the slums on how they eat….thats a str8 koon move jack!!!

    4. funny that while this guy was in jail his boss was in florida locking young niggas up for the same shit!

has anyone asked him what he thinks of officer ricky’s past?

      1. If Meek would’ve gone in the jail in Florida, that would be an interesting start for MMG. “And in the jail, I met Officer Roberts, who happened to be Miami’s biggest druglord working as a CO. I was like maaaan, that shit cray! Yeah, I said that before Yeezy and Hova. If you don’t believe me, give me a hundred grand and I’ll battle them!”

Shit is like some low-budget comedy. A cop turned rapper who infiltrated to the industry, put under his wings a convicted young black fella who become one of the hottest thing. Meanwhile the cop have to decide between their friendship and his duties as an officer – what will be the end of this heartbreaking story … ?

      2. CO is a job like any other, its not a cop, its a JAIL SECURITY GUARD, not saying ROSS is REAL, but how do you think half the Drugs, Iphones, and Money make it into jail to begin with??

      3. Ross was the man in jail, a lot of guys would bring drugs into jail in their butt, he was sneaking in mini-fridges, coffee makers, and this one time a fax machine.
