Marsha Ambrosius Talks “Detox” & Her Days At Aftermath

Nearly six years after signing with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath, Marsha Ambrosius finally released her solo debut – on another label. The British songstress, who has worked with the likes of Nas, Busta Rhymes, Game, Styles P and Hi-Tek, spoke to Rap-Up about her relationship with the Doc.

“Cool. It was a mutual decision to go separate ways,” she said of splitting from the ‘Math in 09. “I think in doing the deal I always just wanted to produce and write under that label, like doing the features with Busta Rhymes and Game and things like that, and work under the Interscope umbrella. As far as putting out solo records, they never really had success in R&B before so I took a backseat as far as doing my artist thing. I think because so many bloggers and so many people were assuming that that was in the process is why it feels like it’s taken me so long to do a solo album, where I only just signed to J Records at the end of 2009. It’s taken a year cycle to do all the legal work, get the album ready, get the paperwork together, print it, mix it. All that good stuff.”

Being at Aftermath for four years, she worked on the elusive Detox. But as is the case with so many artists who’ve lent their talents to Dre’s third solo album, she has no idea if it will make the cut. “Everyone worked on Detox. Detox, we still don’t know. There’s no official tracklisting for it,” she said. “I have no idea if any of the stuff I did will make it. We’ll see.”

      1. Could not agree more. Late Nights and Early Mornings is a cd you can listen to from beginning to end. Great music. Aftermath fucked up.

    1. i.e i was signed/used to help write detox, like biship lamont, stat quo, eve, game, etc., and dropped like a bad habit when my song writing was no longer needed. i was a fool to think Dr. Dre woudl ever put out an album form any artist not named 50 or eminem

    2. Marsha’s always been dope to me, I even liked her when she was bigger too (lol). But musically there arent that many r&b chics that can see her. Her CD is about the only r&b album I have even cared to listen to this year, and it did not disappoint. She’s dope.

    3. You hear a lot of good artists (producers, MC’s,singers) that helped in the making of detox. The first two singles released are subpar for any artist especially “Dre”. Something just isn’t adding up; He must have insane heat in his vaults which at this rate may never be released.
