When it comes to sampling, digging up obscure source materials is almost as important and artfully executed as flipping the samples themselves. Now, that’s not to knock any producers still flipping Brian Bennett’s “Solstice” or the Mohawk’s “The Champ”, but the sheer mystery of some prodcuers’ samples is simply legendary. Now, the Los Angeles Times has revealed one of Hip Hop’s greatest sample mysteries: the bass line to Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II.” Check out their recent article to see who Havoc chopped up for their 1995 classic.
Speaking of sampling, what some fans may not realize is that many producers are putting themselves at legal risk for their enjoyment. Many times, producers don’t reveal the samples they’ve used a means to avoid the enormous costs of clearing said samples. But with the advent of free mixtapes, producers essentially have free reign over their selection of samples. Now, New York Magazine has assembled a list of some of the best uncleared samples in Hip Hop.

I dont mess with these websites that list what records cats used to sample with. Personally I think it’s fucked up that these gassed up nerds are putting real hip hop at risk by listing the records that muhfuckas use for the sake of saying they know who sampled what for bragging rights.
For the most part shit is uncleared for a reason…$$$$$$. PERIOD. If it’s not in the credits, either it’s uncleared OR the producer just dont want yo lazy ass to know whats in his crates!
Dudes dont sample the way they used to because it’s so expensive and labels are too afraid of lawsuits. Thats why the music sounds as lame as it does… NO SOUL.
DJ Premier said it before on the Moment of Truth record by Gangstarr. Knock that Bullshit out!

FUCK SAMPLE SNITCHES… REAL TALK!
what I CAN say about that “Shook Ones” sample is that it’s pretty much unrecognizable. Yeah it was “maybe” sampled from there but it doesn’t sound shit alike honestly (And yes I’ve heard the cut). I don’t think Herbie will sue anyway, he’s a REAL OG and that’s not something to be underminded, plus he’d be lookin’ at literally Hundreds of Millions of Dollars, there’s no way he’d be able to get all of that (the same way that Arabic singer couldn’t when she sued Dre and Quik for that “addictive” sample. Herbie would lose points for that and his music shouldn’t have a stain on it like that, think about how people from our age (25-35) would feel about that…
are u crazy? the sample sounds EXACTLY like the shook ones beat…he didn’t even chop it up he just looped the part…you must be listening to the wrong sample….it’s an EXACT loop right out of the sample

another dope Herbie sample…
dude has money and has been gettin’ his royalties, believe me when I say he’ll save face leavin’ that man Havoc alone… Herbie Hancock is apart of Hip Hop just as much as James Brown is.
FUCK YOU SNITCHES !
Then, if you re beatmaking a bit, u can hear this isnt a bassline. Cause you know how to use the low pass and band pass filters of your MPC. If you do, you know what i’m talking about. Add to this some “tune” modifications and you can hide a lot of fuckin samples.
So I don’t get it. If u know all this shit and u love the music plus u like some producer’s work.
Why you would you put the man’s work and money at stakes just to bigger urself on the fuckin internet in front of fuckin nerds that won’t give 2 fucks about you anyway as soon as they get the information ?
DIE U GERMAN EVIL SHIT
Damn Good Find and hes not gonna sue lol iam sure he has heard the shook ones before ( at least i think so)and knows his music & knows thats his loop in the song he couldve Said Something 14 years ago when this dropped if it was a big deal and he wanted a law suit or something so why would some dude on a forum finding the sample make him wanna sue its not a big deal – Trill

this has to be the most incredible sample in hip hop history, because it certainly is the most mysterious. I mean, the way havoc was able to mask it entirely to make it almost unrecognizable was simply genius. I would have never have guessed this song would be the sample unless I was trying to find it. And even then it would still be hard. It took 16 years to find out!
this sampling shit is fucked up,real talk their has to be better guidelines for sampling how you gonna sue a nigga for lets say 40,000 or so when you have like an 1-5 second sample. The thing is the music industry doesnt respect the fact its an art, it’s one of thoses things whereby like in 50 years plus time there is gonna be a gallery or listening section in a museum for sampling until then niggas have to pay these bullshit fines.
I’m not mad at Havoc’s sample finally getting put on blast. Not because I want to recreate Shook Ones, but because I want to hear what dude did to it. I heard the record and I still can’t tell for sure that’s it. That’s a testament to his creativity.
Think about this: we’ve been sampling since, what, ’86? ’79 if you count Rapper’s Delight jackin’ Good Times (as did Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll and Another One Bites the Dust), even though they actually had a band replay it. In 25 years of sampling, do y’all really think these sources would be a secret forever? Someone probably had that Herbie Hancock record did something with it before Havoc. I’ll agree the internet has taken the mystique out of it but if you want to blame somebody, blame Biz Markie.
In ’91 he got caught samplin’ Gilbert O’Sullivan, dude sued, Biz’s album got pulled from the shelves and from then on you had to cite your credits. So sample snitchin’ has been going on almost as long as samplin’ itself.
yeah I agree with alot of what people are saying here. Sample snitches are bitches. … Theyre part of the reason real hip hop has been going down hill. Now you have all the original artist they sampled from trying to collect royalties or thousands of dollars which is fine but shit. They should take it as a compliment not as them stealing their sound or music.
