Lil Yachty and ScHoolboy Q are two of rap’s biggest stars, but even they were stunned by Lil Wayne’s “insane” album sales.

In an episode of the A Safe Place Podcast that aired on Wednesday (March 27), the two MCs reflected on the changing eras of album sales and how impressive Weezy’s run was.

Yachty began: “Lil Wayne did a million on a leaked, bootleg album! Tha Carter III. I had that album months before it came out. N-gga at the barber shop had it in the back of his Buick.”

A producer also noted that Weezy’s Rebirth album did 176,000 units in its first week, which blew Yachty away.

He added: “That’s insane. Everyone clowned Rebirth. That’s his rock album, right? He was Drake before Drake!”

Weezy’s peek was staggering, especially when his bewildering stats are compared the streaming generation.

For instance, ScHoolboy Q’s celebrated new album Blue Lips made its chart peak at No.13 on the Billboard 200, and according to Hip Hop By The Numbers, sold 34,000 units in its first week.

According to the New York Times, Ariana Grande’s newest release Eternal Sunshine emerged as the biggest first week release of 2024, moving the equivalent of 227,000 sales. Weezy’s peak was staggering.

Though ScHoolboy’s latest effort didn’t come close to eclipsing the Louisiana rapper’s biggest releases, Blue Lips earned plenty of fans, including Hip Hop royalty.

“I was just throwing it out there,” he explained. “But it was bait. I’m like, I think he’ll fuck around and tap in.
