Lil Wayne is among the many public figures shouting out Lou Williams following his retirement from the NBA.

On Wednesday (July 26), the three-time Sixth Man of the Year posted a clip of Weezy dedicating a freestyle to him along with a heartfelt message. Williams concluded his final season in the league with the Atlanta Hawks last year and recently announced that he will be calling it a day at the age of 36.

Wayne’s freestyle was followed by lengthy message to the Underground G.O.AT. that covered notable moments from his career, from still holding the record for most points off the bench to leaving the NBA Bubble to get chicken wings from a strip club.

“My n-gga Lou Williams, man, 17 years in the game, finally retiring,” he said. “You the hardest n-gga in the world when you know the whole fucking NBA community know that you went to the fucking club to get some fucking lemon pepper Lou wings.”

He added: “And I know you know that if that would’ve been anybody else, them n-ggas would not be in the NBA! … N-ggas got songs after you, and you deserve every single bar, you deserve all your flowers, man.”

The two share mutual respect for one another as Wayne often crosses over into the basketball circuit, while Williams has released songs as a rapper, and the two even recorded a track together in 2021.

Lou Williams, known best for perfecting his role off the bench, played for six teams over his 17 seasons in the league and has earned respect from fans of each franchise.

Under Lil Wayne’s tribute post, Drake commented: “the greatest ever.” Hawks point guard Trae Young also replied: “This tough af [three fire emojis],” while former L.A. Clippers teammate Patrick Beverly added: “U snapped [four fire emojis].”

The love for Lou Will is palpable, with the Hip Hop and basketball communities coming together once again to celebrate it. Few things compare to a Weezy shoutout when it comes to exiting in style and Williams clearly hooped hard enough to receive that honor.

As for Lil Wayne, freestyling in the context of sports is nothing new. Earlier this month, he opened the 2023 ESPY Awards with a performance of his hit single “A Milli,” but with a twist.

During the ceremony, he took the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to perform his classic 2008 cut from Tha Carter III.

Instead of reciting all the original lyrics, though, the 40-year-old decided to put a fresh, sports-themed spin on the song while wearing Marc Jacobs x Dr. Martens boots. In his alteration, Weezy name-dropped LSU’s Angel Reese, Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin, the NBA’s most recent No. 1 draft pick, Victor Wembanyama, Super Bowl champion Deion Sanders and NBA legend Dennis Rodman.

“Thank you,” he said following a roar from the audience. “Welcome to the 2023 ESPYs. Thank you for your time, I appreciate you.”
