Lil Uzi Vert has appeared to confirm that the release of their latest album Eternal Atake 2 was to fulfill label obligations to get out of their record contract.

Eternal Atake 2, the sequel to Uzi’s blockbuster 2020 album, was largely poorly received by both fans and critics following its release earlier this month.

Attempting to get to the bottom of the lackluster project, a fan left a comment on Uzi’s most recent Instagram post saying: “So you pulled a Frank Ocean and EA 2 was your Endless to get out of your deal?”

While Uzi did not reply to the comment, he liked it, giving the impression that it is in fact what led to the release of Eternal Atake 2.

Eternal Atake 2 debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart with just 59,000 equivalent units in its first week on sale, a huge decrease compared to past numbers from the eclectic rapper.

The album also holds a 51 out of 100 score on Metacritic, making it the lowest rated effort of their career.

Frank Ocean famously used the release of the Apple Music-exclusive visual album Endless to fulfill his record deal with Def Jam, before dropping his actual sophomore LP Blonde independently just days later.

The R&B singer opened up about the groundbreaking move in a 2019 interview with GayLetter magazine, saying: “I feel at peace with all that. I feel like the best outcome for myself was that outcome, and I feel proud of what I was able to get done with it.

“I love the music and the art that came out of that period, as well as the visual work. It’s definitely a period I look back on fondly.”

He added: “There was certainly noise within the industry about it, like Universal saying no more exclusives could happen afterwards [
] That situation probably won’t ever happen again in the same way, so I don’t know if my advice would be any good as far as how to do it again.

It is not yet known if Uzi plans to quickly follow up Eternal Atake 2 with another project, such as the previously-teased Luv Is Rage 3.
