Lil Nas X is currently facing backlash on social media for a tweet directed at Africa’s gay community amid anti-LGBTQ laws being implemented in Uganda.
On Wednesday (March 22), Lil Nas X took to Twitter and said: “where do the gays be in africa i wanna come there.”
Many people believed that Lil Nas X was unaware of Uganda’s new anti-LGBTQ laws and responded to the artist by warning him of what’s currently taking place in the East African country.
One user said, “Oh sis, @LilNasX, have you heard about #Uganda? the gays there need your voice and platform.” Another user said: “Who’s gonna tell him, [crying laughing emojis].”

The “Old Town Road” rapper’s ill-advised tweet comes after Uganda passed legislation on Friday (March 24) that criminalizes homosexuality. According to Human Rights Watch, the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Bill confirms an existing policy of life imprisonment for same-sex conduct. Also, a person will receive a 10-year prison sentence for an attempt at same-sex conduct.
In addition, the death penalty will be implemented if a person commits “aggravated homosexuality” is a “serial offender” or if someone has same-sex relations with a person with a disability, thereby automatically denying persons with disabilities the capacity to consent to sex.
Furthermore, the bill banishes the “promotion of homosexuality” through various forms of media.
This is not the first time Lil Nas X has found himself in hot water over his controversial tweets. The 23-year-old issued an apology to the trans community last week after posting a failed joke about transitioning on social media.
In his apology, he admitted he was in the wrong for his initial post. The joke in question has since been deleted, but featured a photo of a woman that bared a resemblance to him with the caption: “The surgery was a success” alongside a heart emoji.
“Apologies to the trans community i def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool,” Lil Nas wrote in his apology. “Much love to you guys. sorry.”
