Lil Dicky has said that he hopes confronting his own penis “insecurities” in his FXX show Dave will inspire fans to “live their best life.”
The rapper spoke about his dysfunction during an interview with Billboard, which was published on the eve of Dave’s season 3 premiere on Wednesday (April 5). Dicky (real name David Burd) said the embarrassingly personal details that he incorporates into the show have been “therapeutic” for him.

“It is therapeutic and liberating to have things you’re super insecure about and that you kept to yourself for 27 years,” Dicky said. “and not only am I going to release it, but I’m going to release it in such a public way. Everyone has their own things they struggle with in life, and what I want this show to do is if someone sees me dealing with insecurities about my penis in a proactive way, then maybe it will inspire them to look at their insecurities and not be so affected by them,”
He added: “I want the show to inspire people to live their best lives.”
The first episode of Dave’s third season opens with a cringey sex rap that finds Dicky incorporating lyrics focused on soup, General Custer and “leakage.” The offputting rap was made because of Lil Dicky’s own stress around sex, and he said he wanted to be open about that in his show.
“I wanted to start the season off with something interesting,” he told Billboard. “For a long time, I found having sexual opportunities were more stressful than gratifying. My life as a single guy was less like the great sex I had in Albuquerque than some awkward incident.”

Regardless, he said the uncomfy scenes of Season 3 just show how true to himself he remains as an artist. “I think that’s always been my biggest strength, how unabashedly honest I am,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Dicky has spoken about his penial issues. In 2021, to promote Dave‘s second season, which touches a lot on Dicky’s disfigured penis that he has as a result of a childhood surgery, the “Save That Money” rapper opened up again about his self-conscious experiences with women.
“I was very self-conscious about so many things,” Dicky explained to Distractify at the time. “When I was born, I had surgery on my penis. So, from a very young age, body trauma and physical insecurity has been, like, top of my mind. I would avoid hanging out with girls because I was afraid my penis was too weird. Every step of the way it was the total top of my mind.”
The Philadelphia rapper said incorporating this as a plot line in Season 2 helped him come to terms with his disfigurement.

“I feel like it only made me happier. Life is so short,” he said. “I worry about so much all the time, so just having that huge amount of body insecurity taken off of that list of worries is just a huge weight and it’s allowed me to just live my life in a happier way.”
Dave airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET on FX and streams on Hulu the next day.
