Kevin Gates has always put on for his city, and now the Baton Rouge, Louisiana native has been awarded for his efforts with a key to his hometown.

On Saturday (April 8), the “2 Phones” rapper took to Instagram to share a video of him being surprised with the honor during his Friday night (April 7) performance at the Raising Canes River Center Arena in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In the clip, a member of Gates’ team approaches him on stage and tells him: “We could not come to your hometown without recognizing you. You are a man of God — you said you work out of love, correct?”

“Yeah, I do,” Gates responds, after which a city official is brought out to deliver a speech and award the rapper his key to the city.

“Feeling grateful and honored to have received the key to the city of Baton Rouge!” Kevin Gates wrote in his post. “It’s a privilege and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its growth and prosperity.”

Gates, who is a practicing Muslim, is currently observing Ramadan — and according to him, it’s “been the best” one yet thanks to his latest accolade.

“During Ramadan, we embrace the power of reflection, gratitude, and I must say it’s been the best Ramadan ever,” he concluded his post, which you can see below.

As loved and celebrated as Kevin Gates is, he’s not immune from making bizarre statements that often raise more than a few eyebrows.

Earlier this month, the Baton Rouge rapper explained how simply “telling the truth” has prevented him from getting sick.

Gates stopped by the I AM ATHLETE podcast with former NFL players Brandon Marshall, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, where he said that once he stopped lying, his immune system improved and he hasn’t fallen ill since.

“From me not telling the truth, my throat chakra started getting blocked and I started getting sick. I started having colds until I opened my throat chakra and speaking the truth. I haven’t been sick since,” he said, prompting puzzled looks from the podcast hosts.

“When I was living at the other spot before I moved here, I used to be sick a lot. Just weak and everything because I wasn’t speaking my truth. And when I’m not speaking my truth, I’m not living in my truth. And when you set boundaries, you’re showing love for yourself.”

More curious than that, in January, Kevin Gates admitted to drinking a cup of a woman’s urine while operating a motor vehicle, and he loved the taste because she was “super clean.”

“I love for a woman to piss in my mouth,” Gates told the hosts of Fancy Talk Show. “I love for a woman to piss in my mouth that’s beautiful … I had a woman pee in a cup while I was driving and I drink it, right there. Because there was just nothing – I was so infatuated with this woman to where there was nothing about her that was nasty.”

He continued: “She super clean, she like me she drink nothing but water all day so her piss ain’t got no taste.”

He also recently claimed that he went nearly a month without food or water by choice in a dry fast.
