Kendrick Lamar’s Storytelling On New Album Is “On A Grander Scale,” SZA Says

Towards the end of her recent interview with Complex, Top Dawg Entertainment singer SZA was asked if she could offer an update on Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming album. SZA joked about being unable to speak on the project before describing the album as “amazing,” “beautiful,” and “vivid as fuck.”

She also revealed that K-Dot’s storytelling on the currently untitled album is “on a grander scale” compared to past projects from the Compton, California rapper.

“It sounds amazing,” SZA said. “That’s all I’m gonna say. It really is amazing. It’s incredible. It’s next level. It’s next level for sure. He was storytelling before, but now it’s like on a grander scale. It’s vivid as fuck. It’s beautiful. It’s so dope.”

With her own solo album, titled A, set for release in the near future, SZA also spoke in detail on her project, which will serve as a follow-up to Z.

“It’s more similar I wanna say to S when it comes to like some of the trap influences,” she said. “But then I’m bringing in—I’m working with like James Fauntleroy and Hit-Boy and a bunch of people that don’t necessarily belong together. And then I’m working with Felix Snow again. And he did most of S. And the lyrics are completely different. They’re not as shielded. They’re very aggressive and upfront about everything that I’m going through right now. And it’s a lot.”

Another artist SZA spoke on during her interview with Complex was fellow singer and daughter of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith, Willow Smith. She called the 13-year-old, who she referred to as a little sister, a “genius.”

“I love her,” SZA said. “I think she’s a genius. She’s literally one of my favorite people. She’s like a little sister to me. The things that she’s cultivating at that age is very—It’s beautiful. She’s a genius.”

      1. how is kendrick better than drake he certainly doesnt have the sucess album sales awards or anything else on drake. The only criterea kendrick has drake beat in is the amount of hipster nerd fans. Music is subjective only way to measure sucess is by numbers and the numbers prove drake is better

      2. @ Drake Runs Rap remember what I said… It seems you have forgotten what I told you when you was commenting on the “Drake song Tuesday ” Just in case you have had a memory laps go and re-read the (most discussed singles comment section Drake Tuesday)..Silly boy

      3. HA,HA,HA, Drake runs rap you got owned you old corny azz troll

bring a CD of you’re favorite Drake tracks to McDonalds and ask the manager to play it while you wine and dine that lucky lady with those 99c burgers .

      4. @Drake runs rap: They’re both great at what they do, which is rap, although Drake sings, which is average, no where near the Weeknd or Usher. Kendrick Lamar is a better storyteller and can do anything within the confines of Hip-Hop, while Drake is very versatile in his flow and can change between singing and rapping.

      5. the reason why this drake discussion takes no end, is because he’s not following the genre as the people he’s being compared to. drake is a silly rhymer over club beats

    1. That would be 3 straight classics. That hasnt been done since Kanye. That would be incredible. I dont want to over hype it though.

    2. Kendrick wants to be hard, yet this chick calls his new album beautiful lol Next, XXL will say Kendrick has a kind soul.

    3. damn i havnt been this hyped for an album in years. since mid-2000s prob. i hope hes got a few rap collabos this time.. id like to hear a nas collabo, eminem(actual rap collabo not that gay shit eminem put on his album), few others.

    4. Bang Bang is a great song that exceeds in storytelling. Enriching itself in hiphop soul, bang bang deals with the temptation between love (Jessie J’s verse) and lust (Ariana Grande). Nicki makes a great cameo.

      1. Bang Bang is a terrible song that has no story telling. It’s enriched in pop, no hip-hop soul, and it deals with sex, not temptation between love and lust. Nicki’s cameo was trash and pointless.

    5. Fuckin better be a good storyteller if he’s worked on this thing for two years and counting, I like Kendrick but people duck ride him way too much, it’s comparable to hov. Stop overrating people, and for fuck sakes stop understating people who deserve better: dizzy wright, logic, classified, Yelawolf, Mgk,

      1. MGK? lol name the last time MGK has put together a piece of art like Kendrick and not just a mixtape or album with a random set tracklist.

    6. “lol wants to be hard? you clearly never listened 2 his album or songs”

His control verse was his idea of being hard. Plus he cusses a lot, so he’s not exactly Common. Face it. Your hero might as well become a folk singer after the next person describes his new music as beautiful.

      1. Control was him trying to be the best rapper, not trying to be hard. Many rappers cuss a lot, so that’s not a good argument (look at Eminem, Lil Wayne, etc.). The only one who’s going to be a folk singer is you complaining about the tiniest things that affects no one. I’m pretty sure Kendrick will be fine with someone praising his work.

    7. When you call yourself the king of NY, your trying to be hard. Yes, a lot of rappers cuss, but Kendrick has been labeled many things that people like Wayne never have. I don’t care if KL cusses, but if he’s so good, he should come with better shit. Oh wait, he can’t. Now go wait on ITunes for his next batch of beautiful songs, you fucking fairy.

      1. “When you call yourself the king of NY, your trying to be hard.”

That makes no sense. How does wanting to be the best rapper mean you’re trying to be hard? That’s far from the truth. Trying to be hard would be claiming to be the most thugged out gangsta in the whole world, which Kendrick never claimed to be.

“Yes, a lot of rappers cuss, but Kendrick has been labeled many things that people like Wayne never have.”

So what? That can apply to any rapper.

“but if he’s so good, he should come with better shit. Oh wait, he can’t. Now go wait on ITunes for his next batch of beautiful songs, you fucking fairy.”

He can’t make good music. That’s just your opinion. You really are a dumbass, making a big deal out of KL’s label mate praising his music. Go listen to whatever struggle rapper you listen to and keep your cherry picking hate to yourself.
