Compton, California’s Kendrick Lamar says he planned to have Nas join him on good kid, m.A.A.d city. While their collaboration never came to fruition, the Top Dawg Entertainment/Aftermath emcee says he would have wanted Nas on “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst.”
“I never really got a chance to reach out to him,” K. Dot told Vibe. “I was so wrapped up in getting the music done, samples cleared and mastered – there was so much going on.”
“I just wanted to play him the record. Whatever inspiration he drew from it, I’d just have him there and he would go,” Kendrick continued. “He’s a genius. The record is self-explanatory but he may hear something a little different that might take it to the next level.
Lamar went on to say that he still hopes to link up with the Queens, New York emcee.
“[It was] the only thing that I had a vision for but in due time, God willing, for sure,” he added.
When good kid, m.A.A.d city was released, some compared it to Nas’ major label debut, Illmatic. Kendrick Lamar chose to avoid immediate comparisons, saying his debut was not a “classic, yet.” Lamar went on to note that it’s “crazy” and “scary” to have his album mentioned along with Illmatic. Nas also shared positive comments about K. Dot’s good kid, labeling it one of his favorite albums of last year. He also said the album gives him “hope.” good kid, m.A.A.d. city went on to win HipHopDX’s Album of the Year.

I’m glad Nas wasn’t on that joint. I think the the lack of big names on this album is what make it stand out. The joint with Drake, IMO, is the weakest track on the album. I don’t care too much for the joint with MJB, but that’s only on the deluxe addition. I think I would compare this album more to The Roots UNDUN than ILLMATIC.

Kendrick is not really a nas fan, and you can hear it in his music. You can tell his major influenses are rappers from the south because that’s how his album sounds. I think his favorite label is probably cash money and if he signed with them he would fit in perfect. A nas, kendrick song would not mix together well and would probably sound forced. That song he did with drake sounds more like his style.
