Fans of Kendrick Lamar may have to wait a while before the Compton, California emcee begins work on his sophomore album.
K. Dot recently spoke to Hot 97’s Miss Info about his plans to record the follow-up to his acclaimed Interscope debut good kid, m.A.A.d city. He explained that he isn’t ready to begin working on the project quite yet, and that he simply wants to “live in the moment.”
“I haven’t locked in album mode—I write every day, though. I have ideas all the time, but me going in the studio and locking in, and making the next album—I don’t wanna force things,” he said. “I still want to live in this moment. My biggest mistake today is not living in the moment, and understanding everything that’s going on. Like I told to one of them fans out there, you’re family. I still can’t understand that I’m on this stage right now, so I’m just trying to adapt to it and live in the moment.”
He added, “How I’m feeling right now, it would be more of a moment of inspiration, being inspired to go back in and be confident in what I want to say next. I don’t think it would be an actual date when I say, ‘Okay, let me start.'”
Earlier this week, Kendrick sold out back-to-back performances at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, during which he brought surprise guest performers A$AP Rocky and 50 Cent. Most recently, J. Cole revealed that he and K. Dot are planning to release a collaborative LP.

i think this is smart. you got some artists putting mixtapes out 2/3 months after their albums come out and they really do over saturate the market
I totally agree with K. Dot. He doesn’t have to force anything just because the demand is high. Just don’t take a cue from DR. DRE!
Glad he is not forcing the next one… Hate it when artists feel the need to quickly put out a half assed effort just to keep the name on the street. GKMC was hot fire and I hope he has a follow up that is just as impressive.
Kendrick is a ‘quality over quantity’ rapper. Unfortunately, you don’t see many rappers in that same mind state today. I wish all the luck to him in the future.
Wasn’t Good Kid Madd City technically his Sophomore album, since Section .80 was his debut?

basically if it isnt on a major it does count as a official major realease, u can put out 3 indie albums and the first major album will still b seen as your debut record
I get the indy vs. major label, but an album is an album. To me, Section .80 is his debut album.

How is his third album album his sophomore? Section 80 is a retail album, it was just an independent release. No different than releasing an album on Koch. Anyways, who cares if he’s not working on his next album yet. GKMC just came out. Let that breathe for a minute. Maybe that’s what made the 90’s so much better. Most artists were dropping albums every other year. Now fans today expect new albums, plus mixtapes every 6 months.
great to hear.. this is why jada drops a mixtape album maybe 2 mixtapes then u dont hear from him, same with jayz and eminem(not recently tho).. they dont oversaturate themselves so u want more… thats half the games prob..doesnt take their time with projects
I think this is the perfect decision. He wants his album to go platinum. When you release mixtapes after an album is released, your usually taking away hype from your album. People who havent purchased the album are more likely going to download a mixtape for free with newer content than go in the store and buy an album.
If yall really wanna get technical, Kendrick released 3 albums before GKMC: the Kendrick Lamar EP, Overly Dedicated, and Section 80 all of which are pretty dope. Overly Dedicated is a sleeper, got some classic joints on that album

the kendrick lamar EP was was an EP, obviously, thats not an album even if it was for sale and overly dedicated was a mixtape
if it has 15 tracks, then it’s equivalent to an album regardless of the name… so the EP is worthy of album status. also, O.D. was a collection of 16 new tracks, also equivalent to an album!
he put out three albums worth of material before GKMC
but only 1 of them was an actual album and 2 were mixtapes

One of the few rappers in the game that knows exactly how to do things. He puts out a classic (just like his previous works), of course you let that sit and let us absorb it. All these rappers flood us with half ass material and wonder why they fall off so fast. Continue doing the tours and festivals, let everything soak in, and then hop in the studio and put out another classic in like a year or so. I dig his style. K. DOT!!

Why do you have to add -together with Life is Good- when you say it is one of the best albums (if you said it was the best tied with LiG that’d be ok). Nas stans just can’t stop talking about him and that overrated album..
There’s nothing wrong with dropping two albums in the same year. DMX did it and it worked out good for him. Granted, different time period, but sometimes waiting till you feel inspired can backfire. Maybe try recording a few new songs, and if it feels like the quality is there, crank another album for release around Xmas.
