As talked about as Kendrick Lamar is in 2013, the West Coast rapper says pressure isn’t a factor in his life.
“Man it’s crazy, they would say they expected a lot before the album. I don’t even know what pressure is called anymore (laughs),” said K. Dot in an interview with DubCNN. “I think that’s just a word made up now that people just wanna put on you. Because before I put this album out they were like ‘How much pressure is it to work with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre,’ and then I delivered the album, now they’re saying how much pressure is it for you to do it again.”
“I don’t even know what pressure is now. I’m just doing me man,” he added, matter-of-factly. “I don’t even look at it as pressure anymore, I never looked at it as pressure. I just felt I’d make the best music I could make. You either like it or you don’t, but it’s always gonna real to me.”
Kendrick also explained why his debut with Dr. Dre, good kid, m.A.A.d city, didn’t feature any production from the good doctor, unlike Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, Eminem’s Slim Shady LP, and 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’. “Basically Dre just told me to go out there and do my own thing. See the thing about it is, people get so caught up in the hype with just being with Dre, they just figured he had to stand over your back the whole time while you’re doing music. He looked at me as an artist, cause I already had like three street albums out: Kendrick Lamar EP, O.D. and Section.80.”
Kendrick elaborated, explaining that Dre was content with and confident in his artist’s formula. “He said I was already ready. All I needed to do is go out and continue to do what I’m doing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That was the main thing he was always saying. By the time I came and turned the album in to him in, that was when we were supposed to lock in the studio and do some records. But he decided and said ‘You’re done. You don’t need to go back in with me. Because you have all the records here.”

Respect to dre for knowing that album was fine as it was.
The only reason I care about the myth known as “Detox” is because I want to hear Kendrick all over those Dre beats ala Eminem on 2001: Chronic.
Anyone agree?
I agree.
But still he could have even one Dre beat as a bonus track or something.
Detox ain’t coming out anyway…
I agree with Ivan187. Something not right with Dre not having a beat on there. Yes he signed the kid, but maybe he did not believe or something. If he thought the kid was gonna come out and do 10mm units, there would have been a Dre beat on there. Critically acclaimed as the album might be, we wuz robbed as I’m still not feeling all those slow laid back beats. And I still maintain that a song called Compton by a Dr Dre artist should have been produced by Dr Dre.
Hate to ruffle feathers, but this album does not even begin to hold a candle to the major label debuts of other Dre protege’s, as in Snoop, 50 and Em.
@ Dan
100% CO-sign, what you said about that Compton track
The album is in it’s own league because k dots a very different type of artists compared to dre’s former proteges.
@Big Dan, to say gkmc doesn’t hold a candle to those albums is bullshit. Snoop and 50 were wannabe gangsters; yes snoop was involved with the life early on, but 50 was nothing more than a common corner boy bragging about a reputation in the streets. Who gives a shit. The culture holds a fuckin magnifying glass to everyones lyrics these days, so if you ain’t saying anything of substance, dont bother laying it on wax. 50 album was only a classic because of exceptional production, and b/c 50 actually had a knack for writing hooks; I don’t see any real level of mc-ing on that album because he’s no lyricist. I feel the same way with snoop. To me Kendricks album will hold as much weight creatively for him as Em’s first did for him.
I like all of your points…. although I think it’s silly to say that GKMC doesn’t “hold a candle” to the debuts of Em and 50. The game is so different now and Kendrick’s album was something that has just never been seen/done before. It was powerful man.
If you don’t like the laid back beats, I can understand that, but not all of them are like that. I thought the album was very well balanced.
Big Dan— I do agree it’s total bullshit that “Compton feat Dre” was not produced by him. I guess I was just satisfied at the end of the day after “The Recipe”. I thought that shit was a Dre beat the second I heard it and it is just an instant classic.
Idk sorry for the vent but I enjoy talking to people that actually politely discuss hiphop
Shout out to Kendrick for staying true to himself. His sound is HIS sound and he doesn’t have to thank anybody but the man in the mirror for that.
If Kendrick would’ve waited on Dre, we’d still be waiting on Section .80
While dre didnt produce a beat you can tell which songs he mixed and added some input like the recipe, swimming pools, poetice justice etc
I loved GKMC and i put everyone in my circle who didnt listen to it on to it. with that being said I’m glad K-dot didint wait for Dre cause that dude is just a brand at this point. I have to agree that there should have been at least one beat on that album produced by Dre regardless if dre felt it was a perfect album….you telling me not even a bonus track as the itunes version had like 3 of them? How you gonna come on K-dot album and “rap” on Compton and the Recipe and not have a hand in producing either? Yeah i get he probbaly mixed or helped mix certain tracks but sorry those are lame excuses to divert from the fact that Dre clearly doesnt have confidence in his own beat making abilities and artists as of late are getting mediocre tracks if any at all by Dre.
Detox wont see the light of day …..you’ll have 3 more K-dot albums before you see one Detox.
What set dre back was producing relapse, it wasnt a hit like other albums. to me the production was good, but eminem’s annoying other voice kind of ruined it.
haha what a dumb comment
That was not a dumb comment. Em be doing that funny screaming voice all the time any more. Go listen to old Em, calm, even when he is spitting angry.
New Em just seems like he is screaming all the time. DMX too for that matter
@490717 Thank you for say that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4VSG1uullY
dre doesnt make beats anymore
and if he does, its only a coproduction.
Hey, Kendrick, why won’t you talk about the lack of Ja Rule features on your wack album? It really needed some lethal gangster hooks from the Mighty Ja. Murdaaaa!!!
he could have out a gospel album and still get numbers
dre doesnt want to make kids music
the people liked “encore’
dre doesnt give a fuck

Hey buddy, did you know most of your favorite underground rappers are total douches?
He could have the best production in the world and he’d still sound fucking annoying. MOST OVERRATED RAPPER EVER!
you sound like such a bitch. annoying rapper? what does that even mean, how is a rapper annoying. fucking idiot hip hop fans, that is what im more worried about now days, not the artists
The fact that his career is based in sound and he has a fucking high pitched bitch ass voice which sounds annoying. And a little bitch like you would be worried. Get off next man’s dick you man fan.
waaaa high pitched voice waaaa lol you homo
K-Dot is out there for all the sexually confused lil fuckboys with no education!
you misspelled lil wayne
So what you are really saying is that you REALLY like K-Dot?
ja rule will end kendricks career in no time.
ja rule dont even have a career himself anymore
So, he did not answer why there were no beats by Dre.
What does it matter? Dre ain’t made a hot beat in YEARS….and y’all know that’s the truth
people that are saying kendrick is wack, why? elaborate, because you just sound like a bunch of idiots saying his shit is weak. Cmon, his style might not get you, but you can’t sit there and say he’s wack. His shit is straight fire EVERY TIME. who ya’ll like now days? and don’t fuckin say asap rocky or ja rule. GTF outta here
When the gun blows, and the shots fall / When the smoke clears, we’ll be right here / Screamin murrrrrder, know it’s murrrrrrrrrrrrrrder
good thing he didn’t put the dre beats on this album, it was a classic and didn’t need to be changed !
Only Kendrick Lamar & Kanye West have a classic this decade, CONGRATS
hell no
Lupe Fiasco.
Damn, no Dre beats and the man released a modern day classic, WOW
Wasn’t “The Recipe” a Dre produced beat?? Or did Kendrick just write his verse and let him spit on it??
I believe it was Scoop DeVille who made the beat. But yeah, Kendrick wrote Dre’s verse, definately sounded like K.Dot’s style-wise 🙂
he is impressive, he probably released the best album in recent times, RESPECT.
Amazing album. When I listen to it, it was more than music, it was a story of a person just like me with dreams, fear, dangers, trouble, happiness, adolescence and maturity. He stayed true to his roots he kept it original but different. God bless Kendrick Lamar and hip hop.
The reason theres no more Dre productions is becuz Dre doesn’t have in the inspiration anymore to produce very good or classic tracks.
Dre beats are still on point tbh.
There not as strong as 2001 era beats but they’re still better than 90% of other producers.
Good god, I havent heard an album like this in a GOOD minute.
One of the best Album I ever heard!! Point Blank!!
Wow. One thing I liked about the production of this album is that the beats are different from current hip hop albums and it sounded like all the producers were on the same page. It almosts seems as if the whole album was produced by one person. That’s how smoothly the album flows. Great Album Kendrick.
Good Kid M.A.A.d city one word. Outstanding. Masterfully put together, tight flows, manner of delivery of sometimes morbid content done in a socially acceptable manner, this album appeals to not only dedicated hip-hop fans but also the passive ‘hip-pop’ chart listeners
This album is ahead of its time. Perfection from start to finish.
The best hip-hop debut since Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor.
listening to this really makes the other albums sound alot more like mixtapes
Pac died at 25. Kendrick starts to carry the throne at 25 should be some good years to come
This album will go down as one of the best albums of all time for any genre just like Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die and the other rap albums that are considered the best of all time
lol @ all genres
“This album will go down as one of the best albums of all time for any genre”
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
It’s true, fuckboy.
2 classics under his belt
Crazy thing is that Just Blaze beat (Compton) really sounded like a Dre beat.

Kendrick is a Lil Wayne protege. Drake let Kendrick tag along on his first your. You can hate all you want, but Birdman is making tens of millions of dollars from Bronald Oil & Gas, LLC every year. I know because I am an accountant for Cash Money Records. YMCMB, we have the game by the clit.
Why do the great ones come from under Dr Dre’s wing. Dre creates icons. Birdman creates shit
WIKIPEDIA ON BIRDMAN AND HIS OIL:
In early 2010, Birdman formed an oil and gas exploration company, Bronald Oil and Gas, LLC. The company was a joint venture founded by Birdman and his brother Slim, and the name was a combination of the brothers’ first names, Bryan and Ronald. Evidence of the company’s actual business operations was scant, limited mostly to a website and the appearance of a “pumpjack” tattoo on the side of Birdman’s head.[18] The website indicated that the company’s strategy would be to first develop existing land holdings and seek out new oil and gas leases. In February 2010, Birdman told Ozone magazine that he had been in the oil business for “4 or 5 years” and was “making good money off that”.[19] However, by March 2010, Birdman had almost completely covered the pumpjack tattoo, which sparked speculation that the Bronald Oil project had stalled.[20] As of January 22, 2012, the Bronald Oil website is no longer operational.”
Let me set the record straight: Kendrick is not a Lil Wayne protege; HE’S A DR. DRE PROTEGE. And Drake did not let him tag along on his first tour. YMCMB never helped Kendrick in anyway; Interscope/Aftermath did all that.
Judging from this picture, Kendrick will be the surprise guest at History’s Mountain Man TV show, LOL.
K.Dot is a great rapper, but how could you pass up Dre beats, even IF Dre says he thinks the album was ready, he should’ve insisted more. I bought G.K.M.C thought it was one of the best albums of the year, but I think minimum Dre involvement is the difference of this album being considered a classic somewhere down the line.
If anything, it was a good thing Dr. Dre didn’t produce any beats for GKMC. If he did, it wouldn’t be any different from any other beat he’s done for previous artists (that deep, dark sound) which to me wouldn’t not fit with K.Dot, because the way i see it, K.Dot is a more laid back person compared to his other label mates, Em and 50. I appreciated the production on GKMC as it brought something new to the table, instead of the same shit over and over again. Just shows how much dedication Team TDE had as they could easily have told Dre to produce all the tracks. Mad props to them.
Theres always next album for some Dre production…
I wish he would of just told the truth……DRE AIN’T MAKING BEATS LIKE THAT NO MORE. When are people going to realize and except that Dre ain’t fucking with music like that anymore. DRE know that people and particularly the younger crowd don’t appreciate his beats. All they want to hear is bass heavy trap beats with techno tones and synths. Dre puts REAL INSTRUMENTS in his beats. People don’t appreciate it. Listen to all these songs on the radio and in the club….THEY ARE ALL THE SAME STYLE DAMN NEAR THE SAME TEMPO….if you can’t fit into the puzzle you ain’t getting no play. Furthermore I think that success of Dre’s headphones…zapped the rest of the hunger Dre might have had for music. He is making 100’s of millions of dollars from those things a year……FUCK MUSIC….LOL!
I had no doubts in ma mind dat dis kidd waz just soft n’ a pro bitchass muthafucka. So if tha Good Doc didnt produce its bcoz he’s fake (hes collaborated with bitch gaga remember) n not real like D.O Double G or 50 or even Slim Shadey.
man did you read this dumbass shit you just wrote…if dre thought he was so bitch and fake…why would he even sign him….stupid fuck. go to youtube and see before kendrick even got signed…HOW EVERY WESTCOAST LEGEND GOT ON STAGE WITH HIM AND PASSED HIM THE BATON AND COSIGNED HIM.
K Dot doesnt need Dre beats. Dre is finished. The most dope beats came from his ghostproducers: sam sneed, porter, mel man etc
How is Dre finished? because he can get other producers to make beats and sit back and count is Dre Beats money.
and to the dude below me. as the reply says, why would dre sign KDot if he didnt like him and thought he was fake. Dre has money riding on Kdot.
you answered your own question
he really completely neglects the fact that before the album dropped, he said he had “30 something songs” that were done by dre. Thats the main fuckin reason we expected Dre produced songs.
Good Kid is a solid album with dope lyrics, but its obviously lacking something to make it a great album. I know that in three of four years you wont be killin yourself to hear it and still fuckin with it. With 5 dre tracks, however, it wouldve maybe been that way. As mentioned in the interview: Em, 50, Snoop, and Game came out with albums and dre produced at least 5 on those. Those were classics. I highly doubt anyone wants to say good kidd mad city is in a class with any of those debuts.
just like Busta’s Big Bang album right?? He had Dr beats and he didnt do numbers like Snoop & Em…
no those 30 tracks he said were detox material
so pretty much bec he dont have dre tracks it wont be a classic..sit down..its a monster album classic for sure
Good Rapper M.A.A.D. Overrated. The dude is a good rapper but he is no where near as good as people make him out to be.
agreed. see my comment below. The album, and him, lack something
His album was amazing the album before “Section.80,” is much better; listen to that and you’ll understand the hype.

Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre are both bisexual, so Sweet Kenny Baby was a perfect fit for their team.
so game is bisexual too?

For all of you talking about Dre being amazing, HE WAS amazing at producing at one point. What has he produced recently that wasn’t shit? He doesn’t need to be a producer anymore, which is why he is only getting assist credits instead of actually producing himself. He is busy running his Beats empire, which I think is more profitable and a better for business. Its like Kendrick said, he still took his tracks to Dre for final approval, so he is still involved. He’s being a mentor to the younger generation, something Snoop Dogg should learn also
“He is busy running his Beats empire”
do you really think he actually does anything over there? hes just a name and face of the company. he sits back and collects his money.
hating ass fuck boi’s…did yall not see the part where Dre tells him “Whats not broken does not need fixing”??? The boy Kendrick has his own lane compared to his interscope predecessors. He dont need the same beats as 50, or Em. Everyone complains “We need that 90’s rap feel back”; but you get it and still want the artist to conform. Suck a dick and enjoy this classical music from my boi Dot
lol.. dre, even the props he got were based off of his co producers works
Readinf the responses makes me chuckle…
1. K-Dot sold out as a mainstream artist, dre allows him to come in and do his own thing. Maintain his own artistic integrity without force feeding him beats to make bangers hit the radio. Album still finds its way on the radio due to the quality.
2. More “dre is a product of his contemporaries” BS… where are they now? If he was not a big part of his production how is he still a big name still producing big hits while the people he worked with have fallen into obscurity (or are still around but aint producing no hit records). I find it incredible that everyone who has called DRE out has only been successful and looked at as a great producer while working with DRE. Is that not a crazy coicidence? I will not sit here and claim Dre does all his shit front to back but the man knows what he is looking for. He knows how to take a sound and perfect it. That is his mastery.
You better feel pressure K Dot cause last time I checked you weren’t platinum.
I don’t give a fuck. I’m doing me.
#YaBish
fuck a platinum..dudes got something that will stand the test of time for YEARS..something drake, anyone from YM or frankly anyone in hiphop cant accompllish no adays
I think it was in his best interest not to have alot of Dre beats because then haters would be talking that what would he have done without Dre mess.
I think the album was good compared to the new artist out. Who had a better album? Who was trying to find thier lane and stay it? And on the remix at least he came back and rewrote a verse instead of letting everyone else rap over his beats ASAP,Trinidad,French?
Yall need to stop and let the young boy do his thing.
Kdot just needs to make sure he dont over sature himself by guest versin on 100 ppls shit. and droppin free music..learn from em, jayz and the nas’s of the world..your music means something..make sure ppl pay for it
SUPPORT THIS MAN RIGHT HERE

well i am happy about that because dr dre is working on detox he has a video of him saying that he will announce something big on april 20 2013 so maybe a press conference on it i have high hopes for the dr this year i feel detox its coming
“dr dre is working on detox he has a video of him saying that he will announce something big on april 20 2013”
It’s actually gonna be announced on April 1, 2013. Apparently Detox is gonna be a 3 disc set with the third disc being nothing but Ja Rule collaborations.
I really hope I can go platinum so me and Rick Ross can have something to talk about the next time we go to KFC.
What’s with all of these fakes? I’m already platinum, ya bish. And fuck Rick Ross.
