Kanye West took his political rhetoric to a whole other level on Sunday (September 30) when he proclaimed he wanted to abolish the 13th amendment. From a private jet — which was presumably on its way from New York City to Los Angeles — YE tweeted a photo of himself proudly sporting his MAGA hat.
“This represents good and America becoming whole again,” he wrote. “We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love.”
Amendment XIII of the Constitution of the United States Of America was passed in 1864. Section I states: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
Section II reads: “Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
Penal labor in the U.S. is a form of slavery or involuntary servitude and allowed under the 13th amendment, so it’s possible YE is specifically talking about prison reform. However, the way he worded it made it easy to misinterpret.
Not too long after firing off the initial tweet, he followed up with a clarification.
“The 13th Amendment is slavery in disguise … meaning it never ended,” he added. “We are the solution that heals.”
Once the criticism started pouring, YE tweeted on the subject once again and made a slight amendment to his original statement.
“Not abolish but let’s amend the 13th amendment,” he wrote. “We apply everyone’s opinion to our platform.”

I guess he watched The 13th… I agree with his clarifications to an extent, but his original statement makes me skeptical. Prisons are like slavery in disguise, especially private prisons. Prisons should be about rehabilitation, not servitude. However, labour can be seen as an important part of rehabilitation, as one may feel productive. If the 13th was amended to say that labour should be voluntary, that would be for the best.
Yea well alot of these prison inmates are only serving 1-5 year sentences and coming out to $50 a month probation fees and thousands in fines if they are going to be forced to work like my old man had to he did 15 years 5 years probation upon release thays $3000 in probation fees for 5 years and he had $4500 in fines from his charhes and back child support like you wouldnt have believed so if say someone like my dads made to work which he worked in a furniture shop which made furniture for government office buildings and yrs its nice to be productive but if the states going to save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and create revenue then why shouldnt guys like my dad have the security of maybe having their probation fees waived and his fines waived which woulda been a measly $9500 across 10+ years of work that coulda been put towards back child support so he coulda gotten his liscense back right away instesd of catching stupid driving under suspension charges just trying to get to work everyday the system already fucks inmates bad enough i think they need rehabilitation and assistive programs that help them get on their feet and guarentee a proper direction not abolish the 1 thing protecting them from being treated like farm animals i think if they work compensation should come in one form or another
