Jay-Z and Kanye West hit United Center in Chicago, Illinois last night for their second consecutive concert in the city. During the gig, ‘Ye took a moment to address his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy getting overlooked for an Album of the Year nod at the 2012 Grammy Awards, as well as a Record of the Year nomination.
“Something I figured out earlier today – because you know, everybody came to me last night like, ‘Congratulations!’ because you know I’m leading the Grammy nominations this year. Like we always do it this time,” he said. “But, people focus, they say, ‘You ain’t got Album of the Year or Record of the Year.’ But I figured out, that’s my fault for dropping Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy the same year. I should have just spaced it out a little bit more. But don’t worry, because me and Hov gon’ keep on making shit.”

It’s been a good year for music, especially hip hop. Hip hop fans tend to be the most cynical out of everyone, so you’re still going to have your vocal minority yelling how everything sucks. Not the case, some really quality releases and mixtapes dropped this year (too many to name without taking up a huge chunk).
I think Ye kinda got snubbed on being nominated for album of the year, because MBDTF was pretty nice (not my favorite Ye album, but dope). I think it is pretty ill that he’s nominated twice in the Best Rap Album category with MBDTF and WTT. If he’s not somewhere penning some type of, “at the Grammy’s, my greatest competition is myself” type line, I’d be disappointed in him, lol.
Ironically, his greatest competition is himself. Although, I still feel like both MBDTF and WTT will lose to either C4 or Pink Friday, just because Nicki and Wayne are more popular outside of rap. But clearly they didn’t have the better album.

There’s a reason why Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had so much acclaim when it dropped…it was THAT good. The album was more than just hip-hop. It’s a classic piece that’s very close to, if not perfect. 10/10, 4 stars, 5 stars, across the board. Really loved that album. WTT wasn’t nearly as good…but, that’s a different story. I still enjoyed both.

I think ten years removed from now, MBDTF will be recognized as the album that opened hip-hop world essentially to the “public.” It proved that yes, despite what many of the discriminating musical savants claimed about hip-hop—that it is shallow, repetitive, or untalented—there is room for expression that may not even be possible under other frameworks. That being said, the Grammy committee will be the ones who have to live with the fact that they snubbed perhaps the greatest rap album ever created, and most certainly one of the most revolutionary works across all genres.

Some of the people on this site must have been sleeping at the end of last year or something. MBDTF ended up being the best album on just about every major music publication’s 2010 album of the year list and was one of the highest rated/reviewed albums I’ve ever seen since the early 90s & before the internet blew up. Out of 100 reviews by music publications, people that spend their lives doing this, probably 95 had the album reviewed as not just being a classic, but the word “masterpiec” was often used.
It’s one thing when an album receives mixed reviews, but the people on here that are trying to say the album wasn’t worth an AOTY nomination or even good, really need that realize that they’re living in a fantasy world. You guys are the 5%.
