Live from Korea late this week, and with 20 minutes before boarding a plane, Kanye West hopped on UStream.com to speak directly to his fans. The G.O.O.D Music head touched on many issues, revealing his influences on his upcoming album, after taking a hiatus from interviews and traditional press.
Highlights and notables include:
His Influence: Rotating through the thousands of pictures that he has on his laptop, Kanye revealed how imagery and movies (Avatar, Children of Men, There Will be Blood) influence the production process in his artwork.

His Competition: “…I’m not really thinking about other rappers’ albums. I’m trying to make my music compete with that [fashion designer Alexander] McQueen collection. I’m not saying that it does I’m just saying that is the goal….”
“When I think of competition it’s like I try to create against the past. I think about Michelangelo, Picasso, the pyramids. That’s the reason why I put 5,000 hours into a song like ‘Power.’”
The “Power” Video: Kanye originally reached out to Marco Brambilla based on the civilization piece that he did for Standard Hotel in New York.

I’m sure he’s exaggeration with a reference to how long it took to build a specific pyramid. I make music and I know sometimes it feels like a million hours on one song. What he’s saying is that he doesn’t just say the first words that come to mind and rush his music like so many other artists do. He takes the time to delete an entire verse and replace it with a better one, and change the attack on a cymbal here and there and the panning on a back up channel.

every artist has problems, and in kanye case is ego and saying stuff that’s really on his mind despite who gets hurt. Hate for that but respect him for what does, which go hard. He is different from a lot of rappers, and his beat choice is crazy, and how he does it is also magnificent.
I fell off with KW a couple years back. But he is a real nigga, pushing his own limits. What else can you ask from anyone? Respect.

Everybody’s fucking stupid around here. Either he was exaggerating to make a point, or he’s been working on parts of this song for years. I doubt he’s honestly lying bout that. Why would that make sense? I have songs that I wrote when I was 16, then changed when I was 18, and then changed the beat at 21, and the lyrics again last week at 22… just to make it as close to perfect as I can. Nobody’s heard it, so it’s just an unheard masterpiece that I still want to work on before the copy write an release
And honestly… he might just be saying “I put is 5000 hours” including the various editors and sound engineers that put in hours on the original sample, and the hours spend clearing his mind/ears before going back to it. Sometimes you need a break, but you still consider it time spent on the song because it starts when you begin the creative process and it ends when it hits the public.
