Kanye West Says He Considered Suicide

At the Los Angeles premiere of his film, Runaway, Kanye West revealed just how downtrodden he had been following the loss of his mother and other loved ones. He took some time away from the spotlight following the death of his mother and the public backlash against him after the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, and apparently came back with a new perspective.

“There were times that I contemplated suicide,” West said. Referring to himself as a “soldier for culture,” Kanye added, “I will not give up on life again. There’s so many people that will never get the chance to have their voice heard…I do it for them.”

During the presentation of his 35-minute, abstract film, West made references to his influence on Pop culture and how music and art has helped him deal with loss. The Associated Press quoted Kanye as saying he felt a responsibility to make a meaningful contribution to pop culture and art. Having lost three parental figures within the last three years, Kanye added that his personal issues have also influenced his art in a positive way.

“Everything has been taken away from me,” Kanye said. “I’m so not…scared. I so don’t care.”

From his weekly release of free music, to his recent Twitter presence, West called the period during which Runaway and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy were crafted his “creative sweet spot.” As reported earlier, Runaway will premiere Saturday, October 23. The companion album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is scheduled for a November 22 release.

    1. Kanye West is to urban and 21st century music what Salvadore Dali was to surrealism. What Mozart was to the Classical Era. What Immanuel Kant was to 18-th century philosophy and what Shakespeare was to the art of dramatic literature.

Similar to many other legends of Art, Kanye West is while alive hated by many, but in history he will be remembered as one of the most poignant and important artists of our time.

Yeah, a lot of people will call me a “dickrider” or a “stan” but art is beyond that. Praising art that influences and in a way molds a lot of popular culture is beyond being a bandwaggon fan, it’s realizing that you live in the same era as a Great Artist that will make his mark in history.

      1. I agree Kanye is a great talent. A true artist. However, comparing him to the likes of Dali, Mozart, Kant, or Shakespeare is way over board.

      2. I agree 100% Kala Ye is like a modern day Mozart. A musical genious. I think instead of hating on him we should be glad to be witnessing history in the making

      3. Hellelujiah an actual decent, smart conversation on this site’s comments section. Thanks guy…all great points that were well thought out. Ye is not on par with Mozart and Shakespeare yet, but I do believe he will be one of the few remembered form the hip hop generation in a hundred years or so.

    2. Is it me or has he become totally white washed like other famous Black rappers?? From Amber Rose to Italian leather to Japanese art to French cologne to videos full of so called exotic (non-Black) and light skinned women to his music cover which features white women in prominent positions?? These guys are talented but they seem to glorify european women and european culture.

      1. you obviously dont understand the metaphors he makes with the art he has been putting out and the covers. im pretty sure the “PRESIDENT BUSH HATES BLACK PEOPLE” quote can explain the thing hes trying to point out, figure it out yourself.

      1. how bout someone kill ur mom and 2 others close to u and have half the nation wish u were dead and then tell me how u feel.

      2. theres a reason why half the nation hates
        cause your a fucking douchebag
poor kanye, he thinks he speaks for everyone
        hes a faggot hipster bitch
        fuck him

      3. Someone explain to me how someone who spends thousands on fashion is a hipster?

That or someone explain to this fucking idiot what a hipster is.

Either way, ya’ll dumb as hell.

    3. Everyone has slightly thought about it before when they feel down…he didn’t have to say that..

      1. No motherfucker, everyone doesn’t think of that when they’re down. WTF is wrong with you? Go and get your head checked out for head infections!

      2. Dogg..Obv you aint been through shit in your life, sometimes you feel low and it crosses your mind it dont meen he put a gun to his head and ate 50 pills…I really hope you go through some real tough situations from here on out…for 10 years str8 and then answer back….f(&K boy!

    4. …If by some horrid way in hell, he had ever went through with those contemplations, imagine how much worse music would’ve gotten…Keep ya head up Ye, don’t let the media or the haters get to you, they aren’t worth it

    5. Dude saying anything to sell records. He just trying to get in the media to sell his album. Dude is a drama queen. He makes good though.

    6. There isn’t many artists who have what Ye has. A complete passion for his craft. He doesn’t do it for the money, but – a bit cliche- for the glory. As children we dream. As pre-teens we dream hard. As teens we dream of being with the best. As adults we usually settle for what we can get. Kanye has proved that with pressure and a fueled up sense of motivation, any dream is reachable. A humble beat maker to one of the most talked about performers in Hip Hop’s history. If that isn’t SO AMAZING… than what is?

    7. i’m gonna punch kanye in the mouth when i see him.

reason 1: thinking of commiting suicide
reason 2: for naming his album “my dark twisted fantasy” – (emotional motherfucker)
reason3: for sayign he sold his soul

i’m gonna beat him with a big ass hammer with a cross on the handle.

kanye, you were a part of my inspiration but your pissing me off now brotha.

    8. Those losses were karma. He used a prophets name (Jesus walks) to fulfill his own greed….so his closest loved ones were taken away. Now all he has are his material possessions. I’m not religious myself but I would never use any prophets name for fame or music unless I lived up to their standards.

      1. Are you stupid? You do realize the entire point of that song was to praise his lord and savior, right? The thing he talks about in that song, the only point, is that through it all he still looks up to his god to forgive him and let him grow stronger.

I know you’re in need of your protein, but get off the dude’s nuts.

      2. No shit really? I didnt know what the point of the song was. Thanks for pointing it out…thanks. Look at the materialistic/arrogant/self centered way Kanye has led his life from that point. My point was the man used a prophets name to boost his career, then turns around and lives the life of a greedy gluttonous pig. So Im saying those losses of his loved ones are most likely a higher power punishing Kanye and humbling him. Although it didnt seem to work.

    10. I thought he valued his life esp. after he almost lost his in that car accident and his mother’s passing. smh @ Yeezy for thinking the world cares if he goes out like Kurt Kobaine.

    11. yo i head the other day that waka flocka flame was considering suicide when he lost a rap battle with justin beiber. blood was mad depressed, then eli porter went in on his ass and he was straight up devastated. but waka kept his head up and got through it, and now his alphabet swag is presidential, he even knows most of the vowels! he still got some work to do on i and u, its mad difficult for him, but he has faith and i know he’ll eventually comprehend all of the english alphabet.
