Lately, Kanye West has been known more for his mouth than his beats. Once again, Ye finds himself back in the spot light for another off color (no pun intended) comment.
In the December 2006 issue of Essence magazine, West sounds off on video girls and “race mixing”.
“If it wasn’t for race mixing there’d be no video girls. Me and most of our friends like mutts a lot. Yeah, in the hood they call ‘em mutts”.
The comment caught the eye of Roy Innis, National Chair of the Congress of Racial Equality. Innis was very active in the civil rights movement in the 60’s and 70’s and makes a reference that Kanye’s comment may be indicative of Blacks back sliding to days of self hatred.
“I was one of the pioneers of the concept of Black is Beautiful. That we must be proud of our African ancestry. Unfortunately, the demon of self-depreciation has been the most difficult demon for Black Americans of all complexions to expell. Darker skinned Blacks like Kanye West have had an even harder time accepting Blackness in themselves and in others. I wonder how much we have gained psychologically, since the bad old days of the 60’s, in our appreciation of our Blackness.”
West made headlines last month after an on stage tirade in Europe after Touch the Sky failed to pick up the Video of the Year Award in Europe. The rant is rumored to be a publicity stunt.
I am half Hungarian and half Black and I know if another person of a different race had called him a n*gger he would have had Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton behind his scrawny little a** in a heartbeat trying to get interviews to show him fake crying. I hope your career dies. Especially after what you did to Taylor last year. I also know if a white person had done what you did to a black entertainer and said a white person should have won that award then Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be saying it was a racist comment. But nooooooooooo when the never can do anything wrong Kanye West does it, it’s the right thing to do. Go crawl in under a rock and stay there.
Again, justice and consciousness is the goal.
