Joyner Lucas has set the record straight on rumors he tried to fabricate a beef with DaBaby.

During an appearance on Shaquille O’Neal‘s The Big Podcast on Wednesday (April 24), the North Carolina rapper revealed that a well-known “lyricist” had reached out to him and offered to start a fake beef for publicity.

While discussing J. Cole’s divisive apology to Kendrick Lamar after they traded shots on “Like That” and “7 Minute Drill,” DaBaby said: “Two days after the situation took place, I got a call — I won’t say from who. I got a call from a certain rapper. It’s like a lyricist, I’m sure y’all know him if I said his name. 1000 percent y’all know him.

“He shot me a text, he was like, ‘Hit me, you gon’ like this.’ I called him and was like, ‘What up?’ […] He like, ‘You wanna go up? How you feeling?’ I’m like, ‘What’s up? Talk to me.’

“He said, ‘All the back-and-forth between J. Cole and Kendrick got me fired up! Bruh, I feel like we should diss each other. We cool behind closed doors [but] we should diss each other. I feel like it would just go crazy.'”

DaBaby said he responded by acknowledging the potential gain to be had from a diss song battle, but ultimately decided against it.

“I know for a fact what that would do,” he said. “But at the same time, it’s a little more personal with me. I’m not about to say certain things about you if I don’t really feel a certain way about you.

“I told him, ‘And that’s out of respect for you.’ ‘Cause it can go either which way with me.”

The latter was embroiled in a beef with Logic in the mid-late 2010s, which he later admitted was due to jealousy.

“Honestly, it was very strange. It really was. I think I was jealous of him,” Lucas explained on The Breakfast Club in 2020. “The reason why I say that is because I felt like where he was at at that time was where I wanted to be so much.

Lucas also revealed that he and Logic patched things up over the phone before teaming up on the song “ISIS.”

DaBaby’s clashes, on the other hand, have mostly occurred outside of the studio — from fighting the brother of his baby mother DaniLeigh to fatally shooting an alleged thief in self-defense inside a Walmart.
