John Legend and The Roots Team Up For Cover Song LP

John Legend and The Roots have teamed up to bring forth a covers album titled Wake Up. The title comes from an Arcade Fire song but no Arcade Fire tracks will make the album. Instead, fans can expect covers from greats like Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone, among others.

Tracks by Roberta Flack and Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes will be covered on the album, which will consist primarily of protest songs from yesteryear.

“Everything is certainly inspired by the original but we took our own creative licence with it,” John Legend recently told Rolling Stone, according to The Guardian.

?uestlove added that this will be a companion to The Roots’ How I Got Over. Both discs are slated for summer releases. ?uesto went on to share that these Wake Up songs would be “uniquely interpreted.”

“I wanted to choose cover songs that were so under the radar, so uniquely interpreted, that it would take you a second to realise that these are cover songs [at all].”
