Joey Bada$$ took to Twitter yesterday (June 22) to give himself the crown of independent Hip Hop, according to Pigeons and Planes.
He posted his sales figures for his debut album B4.Da.$$ and claims that those numbers make “me the #1 Independent Hip Hop artist/brand in the world…”
“Reminder: Joey Bada$$ sold 57,000+ albums in his first week, INDEPENDENTLY,” he writes. “At 20 years old…$10/album…85% of shares, do the math…”
B4.Da.$$ was released on the same day as Lupe Fiasco’s Tetsuo & Youth and Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 The Wait 2.
Joey Bada$$ reps Pro Era, a collective of rappers that was founded in Bada$$’ hometown of Brooklyn, New York. They are independent and therefore get to keep the majority of the profit from album sales.
Last week, fellow New York independent artist Troy Ave claimed he has the “Rap Album on the Year” with his project Major Without a Deal, which sold 7,708 copies in its first two weeks.

“NO single, NO party hosting’s NO real endorsements Reminder: NObody cares + u WORK for Sony Red / Cinematic Records #FakeIndependent,” Troy Ave wrote on Twitter today (June 23), referencing the labels to which Joey Bada$$ is signed.
