JID is the latest artist to receive a boost from the virality of social media trends, resulting in one of his hit singles now becoming a chart-topper.
On Thursday (December 14), Billboard shared that the Atlanta rapper’s collaboration with 21 Savage and Baby Tate “Surround Sound” has gone to No. 1 on its TikTok Top 50 per the latest tally. Taken from the 33-year-old’s The Forever Story, the song gained a lot of traction on the platform thanks to the “Booty Ceiling Challenge.”

Unlike JID, not everyone in the Hip Hop community is thrilled about TikTok’s broader implications. Two months back, Jermaine Durpi pulled no punches in conveying his gripes about the current state of Hip Hop and how social media could be causing things to go downhill.
In mid-October, JD took to Instagram to share his thoughts on participants of the culture submitting ideas to social media. Additionally, he also claimed that TikTok has muted a few of his songs.
“I was just watching this video that Issac Hayes Jr. posted with JAY-Z talking about the culture giving away the culture to these apps,” he began. “And then we have to go to these apps and ask for shit that belongs to us. And I thought about me because Tik Tok muted one of my videos recently.”
He continued: “It’s my music, with my voice on it, and I gotta ask these n-ggas to unmute me, right? That’s bullshit. And in my Hip Hop 50 resolution, one of my Hip Hop 50 resolutions was that, we can’t keep going for this type of shit. We gotta give a fuck.
