Jay Z Under Investigation After Purchasing Gift For Robinson Cano

A $33,900 Hublot watch rapper Jay Z purchased for Yankees infielder Robinson Cano has resulted in the Brooklyn rapper being investigated by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). According to Billboard.com, Cano, who is currently one of Jay Z’s clients at the newly-launched Roc Nation Sports, received the pricey watch while celebrating his birthday in Belgium last month.

Cano personally thanked Roc Nation and provided fans with a picture of the limited edition Shawn Carter Classic Fusion by Hublot watch in an Instagram post made on October 22.

The gifting of the Hublot watch to Cano on behalf of Jay Z and Roc Nation may or may not be in violation of a MLBPA rule, which states that, “No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person’s or firm’s services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor.”

Additionally, any gift worth $500 or more that is given to a client must be disclosed to the MLBPA. It is currently unclear what disciplinary action or actions Jay Z may face if he did in fact violate the MLBPA rule with his gift.

Since its launch in April, Roc Nation Sports has recruited a number of athletes including Skylar Diggins, Geno Smith, Victor Cruz, and Kevin Durant.

Similar to Cano, Diggins also received a gift from Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports shortly after signing with the Roc Nation management branch. The Tulsa Shock player received a new Mercedes Benz after graduating from the Mendoza College of Business this spring.

After receiving her gift, Diggins tweeted, “I got 99 problems, but a BENZ ain’t one.”

      1. You’re just as stupid… He doesn’t own the Nets anymore he had to sell his shares and release ownership of the Nets to become an agent…

    1. Jay dont know what the fuck hes doing leave that shit to the real agents dog you got enough money for your kid.

    4. The funny thing is Cano won’t get any flack from this. It’s not so much a big deal cause it’s been going on forever, but the integrity of sports then comes into question. You shouldn’t need to be given a $33k watch to be represented by somebody.

      1. Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s a gift. If he bought him a $200 watch it probably wouldn’t be a problem right? What they’re assuming is that he’s buying him out. But buying him an expensive gift doesn’t mean he’ll do whatever Jay-Z wants.

      2. its a conflict of interest. this aint the 80s anymore gentlemen. in the securities industry you have to track every gift. anything more than $100 is out of compliance. this is a rookie mistake

    5. “Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s a gift”

So dudes just give each other $33k dollar watches everyday? lol Here homie. Have this diamond encrusted rolex. You do realize you have to be on my bowling team now. Come on. Cano is a big boy who can afford his own jewelry. If that’s all it takes then Jay should shower him with even more goodies. By the start of the season he’ll own Cano’s soul.

    6. How can Jay justify sitting and talking politics with Bill Maher one day, the projects this and help poor people that, then dump tens of thousands of dollars into the laps of professional athletes as “gifts” who will be making their own million-dollar paychecks soon enough? Oh yeah, he doesn’t have to justify it, he’s a celebrity worth millions. He can talk out of both sides without shame or consequence.
