J. Period Reveals Role In DJ Hero, Mixes Classics

    As the third and final installment of his Messengers series [click to listen] with K’Naan came to fruition this week, Brooklyn-based deejay J. Period [click to read] revealed to HipHopDX last night that he has confirmed a role in Activision‘s upcoming DJ Hero game.

    Other deejays included in the game are pioneer Grandmaster Flash [click here], Jazzy Jeff, DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip and the late DJ A.M. As reflected in that roster, including J. Period, the game approaches deejays in several genres and styles, including Club, Hip Hop, mash-up’s, Trip Hop, Electro and House. Revealing his own role in the game, J. Period revealed that he “takes part in an epic collaboration featuring the biggest talent and hottest mixes ever amassed on a 93-[song]-soundtrack, producing two exclusive remixes.  For his first, J.Period holds down New York’s legacy as the birthplace of Hip Hop, remixing two of its greatest anthems: Gang Starr ‘Just to Get a Rep’ vs. Mobb Deep ‘Shook Ones, Part 2.’  For his second mix, J.Period turns to more traditional turntablism, cutting and scratching Billy Squier’s classic break ‘Big Beat’ alongside a previously unreleased gem from Q-Tip called ‘Good Thang.’ The result is turntable artistry at its finest.”

    J. Period has built a reputation for mixtape greatness through his track record of critically-acclaimed, authorized mixtapes with artists such as Q-Tip, Mary J Blige, Big Daddy Kane and The Isley Brothers. Presently, Messengers, a three-installement mixtape with K’Naan, paying tribute to Fela Kuti, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley, has over 85,000 overall downloads and streamable plays so far.
