J. Cole Talks Having A No. 1 Album, Getting Congratulations From Jay-Z And Beyonce

    J. Cole is having quite a week, as the Roc Nation emcee’s Cole World: The Sideline Story not only debuted at No. 1, but also sold over 200,000 units in its first week.

In a brief interview with Angie Martinez, the North Carolina artist spoke about all the praise he’s been showered with.

“Blink-182, man, I told y’all I was comin’ for y’all,” a tired J. Cole said, laughing. “We celebrated last night because it happened to be….my homeboy’s birthday.”

“Got the Jay-Z call,” he continued. “Got the Beyonce congratulaitons email, that was a good look. She the best. She’s the nicest. For real, it’s unbelievable.”

“I actually woke up today from the plane ride with the most text I’d ever had. You know when you turn on your phone and it’s text after text after text? I was the most ever. Ridiculous amount.”

    1. dawgin on blink… ha well see if he can put up 150 K his first week sales after bein in the music biz for 15 years

    2. Blink-182 has sold 10x platinum, so J Cole has a long way to go to catch them. I see Jay still buying articles space from websites for traffic lol.

      1. Totally Broseph, Like J. Cole shouldn’t be Number 1, cuz BLINK’S ALWAYS NUMBER 1! Wacky Patacky, senor, i’m glad me and you are bros. By the way brochacho, do you listen to Sum 41? They’re INSANE IN THE MEMBRAIN, Cypress Hill, they’re kind of rap but they also ROCK OUT HARDCORE brosauce. You got any gauges? I’m about to triple gauge my ear, and get a leather strap for my wrist, CUZ I HATE MY PARENTS RAAAAAA! Anyways good catching up with you Brostache.

    3. it was a joke that stemmed from the last interview he had with angie about blink 182…
congrats Cole – hope this album hits gold and that u are here to stay

    4. Seriously HHDX, are you going to make an article for every single thing this dude does. His album was decent at best but he still got a number 1 selling album. Good for him but do you have to post about his every action or achievement. You weren’t this excited when Lupe had his first number 1 album. So what is so special about J.cole??

      1. Every year the hip-hop media trots out another great young hope for the industry. Last year was Drake (oddly), this year is Cole.

    5. wow i didnt think this site could get any worse, how much is roc nation paying you guys

now we have another article about how this guy got a number one album and of course you cant have a j. cole article without mentioning jay-z a few times

    6. HHDX IS KILLING ME … IM NOT EVEN MAD J.COLE, THESE ARTICLES AREN’T HIS FAULT, ITS THE FUCKING SITE … HOW MANY ARTICLES ARE YOU GOING TO PUT UP WITH THE SAME TOPIC ???

    7. Y u guys mad? Let Cole get his shine, haters !!

Cole World !! No hit single and did more than Wiz and Big Sean ! WOOOOOOO Cole Won ! Real Hip Hop Won !

      1. so, having a hit single means it’s not real hip hop, huh? i guess jay z and the notorious b.i.g. weren’t real hip hop because they both had numerous hit singles. now if j cole hadn’t never had any singles out, then you could say that he didn’t have any hit singles, because he didn’t try. the thing is, j cole attempted to drop 3 singles and none of them were hits. you can’t hate on wiz and sean because they have more fans. hip hop been winning for a long time.drake went platinum, nicki went platinum, wiz, sean and b.o.b all had gold albums and multi platinum singles. cole had an ok week, but it wasn’t killing the game cuz none of singles sold anything. in the record biz, all sales count, not just album sales. merchandising, indorsements, singles and even ringtones sales. everybody know that cole barely got 200,000 and the ones the label didn’t purchase, rihanna’s fans got them. maybe 50,000 real cole fans actually got it.

    8. Huge J. Cole fan so I’m hyped as shit that this album went #1, and I also thought it was great. Not EXACTLY what I wanted, but close to what I expected.

Anyway, to all the people hating on DX for posting articles, let me explain something about this crazy internet thing. Hiphop DX knows exactly how many people click on an article. They also look at how many comments an article receives and how long people dwell on the article page. In order to drive traffic and meet consumer demand, they post articles related to topics/artists that tend to garner the most clicks/interest. If you hate that they put J. Cole articles up every day, stop fucking clicking on it and commenting. Regardless of how you feel about the article, the fact that you are on this page is another impression they can count when selling advertising space, so articles that create any type of emotion (positive, negative) are ultimately good for them as long as they drive an action from you.

Personally, I’m going to keep reading them, because he is an artist of interest to me. Truth be told, I think there are a lot of people like that who will continue to check these articles. I’m just saying you’re hurting your own cause by jumping on these pages and making comments. If you really hate it that much, e-mail the site, but stop clogging the comment sections with that BS.

      1. you are obviously a j cole stan. you think you are going to convince the viewers that j cole is an amazing artist, when in reality he is below average considering he is 27 years old. you are clearly one of the people you speak about, that keep checking articles, so don’t act like it’s wrong for other people to do it. J Cole was featured on Blueprint 3, opened up for Drake, Jay Z and Rihanna, so we already know that he didn’t have some grassroots shoestring marketing campaign. He even got a chance to perform a “Who Dat” at the Grammy Awards in front of millions of viewers, so everyone knew who he was, but the majority wasn’t feeling him at all, that’s why his songs didn’t get that much radio play. If the radio station saw that people wanted to hear his songs, they would have played his stuff all day. You yourself said that helps with selling ad space. Guess what? The same concept applies to radio as well.

Everyone has their own opinion, just like assholes. Just because people don’t think your favorite artist is John Blaze, it doesn’t mean that their typing “BS”. It’s a free country and people stating how they not feeling J Cole, is their GOD givin right, so stop acting like a crazy stan. You think people have some type of cause by “jumping on these pages making comments”, when in reality, it’s not that deep, kid. Folks are just saying how they feel about the situation. You are the one who is taking it deep and making it your cause, because you are a crazy stan. It a shame that you think people care about advertising numbers and hit numbers, when it’s not that deep. The majority of people who actually purchase albums, don’t be on blogs, they out there living life in the real world, something you should think about doing.

Yeah, Columbia and Jay Z purchased ad space on tv, radio as well as internet, but that’s just standard business practice, so it’s nothing wrong with that. They tried to build up a fake hype for 2 years with J Cole with little success, considering the time and money spent. Cole had a nice little debut, however, it was nothing history making about it.Stop trying to make the world feel the fake excitement, like this album sold 400,000 in it’s first week. We the public don’t beleive you, because you need more people.

      2. Why can Hip Hop fans not be happy that J Cole gave the Hip Hop culture another #1 album. He beat out Blink 182, showing that Hip Hop is still the most popular music art form. I am happy for the dude, he WORKED for what he wanted, be it 218k or more. He stayed honest to himself not trying to be something he is not and gave the culture great music. All the hating is crazy.

      3. You literally didn’t address what I wrote at all. I don’t care if people say that they don’t like J. Cole, I completely agree that that is within their rights. I probably said 5 sentences about the artist himself, one of which implied slight disappointment with the album. The purpose of what I wrote was to address people who complain that Hip Hop DX keeps posting articles about him, explain why that takes place, and explain why their actions are contradictory to their goals. I check articles of the artists I like because I WANT the site to continue to post articles about them. You appear to be a bit of a hater looking for any reason to yell, and the complete lack of logic in your response reminds me why I rarely post comments on this site. There are definitely some intelligent posters, but you don’t seem to be one of them.

      4. @ g: you are obviously a crazy stan, who thinks that you can convince the world j cole’s album went gold in the first week. next week his album won’t be number one and it won’t sell six figures. if his album sells at least 100,000 copies in the second week, then i will apologize for being wrong. guess what? his numbers want be at 100,000, because sony ain’t buying anymore cuz they already lost too much money on this album.

      5. I’m truly amazed that these responses to my comment are still so irrelevant to the comment itself. I feel like you might be trying to fuck with me by continually not addressing the actual point of what I said, or just not reading the words I write and saying whatever is in your brain. Either way, touche, sir.

    9. Wasnt a J.Cole fan until he impressed me by putting up these numbers. Haha. I hated this nigga with a passion but now that he has shown me that he an market himself and make business moves im a huge fuckin fan. 200k in one week is no Weezy numbers but its still big time especially for a rookie mc. Cole World is the truth after these numbers. Happy as fuck for a black man success. Fuck the haters Coley Cole. Do you. Make that money and become a huge success. haha.

Fuck u haters. ROC NATION bitches.

      1. Sound like a d*ck riding punk to me…and I don’t insult people online. You must be saying that to get reaction. Oh well I bit fuggit

      2. How lame is this shit right here. So, you wasn’t a fan until “these numbers” came out? Boy you as fraud as hair weave. Has it really to this? Has it come down to insane people like you giving fraudulent testimony? Real don’t respect fake and don’t back lies because that shit backfires.

In the words of a late great veteran, “You living fantasies, nigga I reject your deposit”

      1. For the same reason everyone with a dissenting opinion is called a hater.

Heck I was called a hater for wishing Cole had better production on his album and saying that I hope he reaches out to other producers for his sophmore venture.

      2. for the same reason, you call people who ain’t feeling his music are called “haters”. the majority of the people just wasn’t feeling cole and that’s the truth. men lie and women lie, but the numbers don’t. cole didn’t sell many singles like his peers who had platinum singles before their records even dropped and on top of that, he did 215,000 when you stans were praying for 415,000 lol.

    10. Man its so much hatred spewed on here, sayin he only sold 50,000 to real fans and the rest the label bought? Haha man, haters will NEVER rest untill they bring u down, the man worked heard, went to and graduated college, and STILL was on his grind for the music and yall STILL find a way to be upset smh. Real hip hop fans listen to the lyrics and know that J.Cole, Wale and Kendrick Lamar are on point and will have u rewinding the music to hear what they said and comprehend the line. Cole throws line after line, so all haterz KEEP AT IT, cause all u doin is motivatin the man!

      1. i guess people who like the artists you like aren’t real hip hop fans, huh? you can’t really be serious. plenty of artist come up hard in the ghetto with one parent and 5 siblings and still graduate college. j cole is an only child, who had 2 parents retire from the military, so he didn’t struggle too much. ain’t nobody hating on him, because they ain’t feeling his music. don’t get mad because people didn’t like his wack singes and he didn’t break any debut records, like you stans wanted him to. crazy stans like you, make people like me relevant.

      2. Man, its funny to me to hear someone call another person a Stan, like u don’t got a rapper ur a fan of. All opinions aside the man sold 200,000+ records fact or fiction? And people like u doubtin his lyrics is ludcris…I don’t get how somebody could have cold hard facts and proof in their face, and ignore it, smh but i guess people like u, make people like me rich. Because fools are short sighted but u seem worse cause can’t even see wats infront of you, so ur blind, “Ray Charles w/his shades off” couldn’t get any worse. And I never said nobody else did it, and who he grew up with doesn’t determine if the man can rap. Way too much is put into how people grew up and where they did…he doesn’t rap about stuff he didn’t do, not sayin he’s in the trap when he wasn’t, he relatin to people through similar experiences. And a real artist don’t have a fake facade, they keep it 100 and connect to fans through that. If u don’t like his music, ur not a hater, but a hater cnt give a person who got skills his props. I don’t like kobe, but he’s a killa on the court, but if i said kobe is wack i’d be a hater…its as simple as that. So again, for anyone that says the man don’t got skills, and dont deserve to be signed, hop off ur own dick, open ur eyes, and give credit where its due. Feelings aside most things are black and white, if u tellin me the man don’t got bars, u clearly don’t know hip hop.

    11. What is wrong with people,. this man could have used his connections with Jay-z , but he didnt ,. self produced album with 0-none features in this market,. give the dude credit damn people is crabs

      1. Zero features? Didn’t use his connection with Jay-Z?

Jay-Z is a featured artist on the album. Suddenly Drake’s not a name artist? Trey Songz isn’t that “hottest” R&B singer on the market?

I don’t have a problem with liking the guys album, but be honest truth.

      2. Drake, Jay Z, Trey Songz and Missy Elliot are all named artist that were featured on this album. Also, J Cole was featured on Blueprint 3, was the opening act for Jay Z, Drake and even Rihanna, so chill with your foolishness.

    12. #1 album in the country (and highest debut since nicki) with no chart topping single. Gotta respect that.

      1. People can say what they want but that is pretty impressive. I do wonder what changed between now and say Lupe Fiasco’s debut that he was able to sell so many albums. Heck even just looking at the other good music that’s come out this year, I’m curious about how Cole managed to get so much buzz.

      2. It’s hard to respect him wasting Columbia’s money on an expensive Paula Abdul sample and still not selling nothing. His stuff just wasn’t john blaze enough face it. Your stanning won’t fool the public and this artist will never be platinum with fake love.

      3. @Anonymous – Didn’t stop him from going #1 in album sales so it’s all gravy.

@Respect – His stuff wasn’t john blaze enough? He has the #1 album in the country. His stuff wasn’t john blaze to YOU, but it was to several others. Let that ether burn slow.

Yall are some terrible trolls. Try harder next time.

    13. Seems like i proved my point, everytime dis guy is in a interview Jay-z’s Name is always in da title literally smh.not lieing check it

      1. you are absolutely right and he needs Jay Z to get a little shine. Real know real and this cole world ain’t that real.

      1. Anonymous hop off honest dick, why would you speculate on what another mans intention were, honestly his comment wasnt related to this article, someone pointing that out doesnt make them a stan. Elzhi is dope, but so is J.cole., hes not a “B.E.T radio rapper” I wasnt feeling Cole world much either to many songs I already heard. That song he made with missy is fire though.

    14. hey COLE..imma let you finish, BUT BLINK 182 DESERVES TO BE NUMBER ONE
      BLINK 182 >>>>>>>>> COLE WORLD

AND IM A HIP HOP FAN MOTHA FUCKAS
