A little over a year after announcing his retirement from a genre he felt bordered on “wack,” Atlanta lyricist ILoveMakonnen has made his return to rap with the release of Fun Summer 17 (Vol. 1).
In a post uploaded to his Instagram account, which has also returned from retirement, Makonnen promised “New Vibes” with his latest project, and asked fans to share the names of their favorite songs from Fun Summer 17.
Consisting of seven tracks, Fun Summer 17 Vol. 1 is the first project Makonnen has released since 2016’s Drink More Water 6. It also serves as his first release since coming out as a gay man.
Throughout the project, ILoveMakonnen croons and raps his way from track to track, with the backing of production that morphs from trappily upbeat to melodiously somber.
