The Roots’ Questlove Explains Why Drake’s ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ Album Is ‘A Gift’

While Charlamagne Tha God may think Drake’s new album Honestly, Nevermind sounds like “elevator music,” Questlove thinks it’s going to make people want to dance. On Friday (June 17), as fans and peers continued to dissect the 14-track project, The Roots drummer and modern-day renaissance man shared his thoughts on the album — but from a DJ’s perspective.

“My relationship to new hip hop is mostly on a ‘how can this serve me & my dj gigs?’ & less about me listening as a fan,” he wrote. “That said this @Drake jawn is a gift. Only people not wit the program are people who don’t move their bodies. That ain’t sexy yo.”

Questlove’s comments were met with mixed reactions. Some people quickly read between the lines and pointed out Questlove was essentially saying he wasn’t a Drake fan but would play his music simply to get people on the dance floor.

When one person suggested the album was “perfect, digestible house music,” they were met with comments such as, “Are we listening to the same beats?”

Feedback on the project has been lukewarm at best, with many calling it Drake’s “worst” album yet. Despite how people feel about it, it’s doing record-breaking numbers. According to a press release, it became the biggest dance album in Apple Music history, breaking the record for first-day streams worldwide — in one hour.

Honestly, Nevermind is currently streaming on all digital platforms. Find it below.

      1. To be honest he never was considered a great rapper… only females, gay people, rich kids, celebrities and soft boys enjoy his music

    1. People really don’t get it. Drake is primarily hip hop, but he isn’t 100% hip hop. If you don’t like Dance music, then you obviously don’t like the album. But that doesn’t make it a bad album. Expand your taste, seriously.

      1. I think the people criticizing it honestly and not on some I hate Drake shit have some legit gripes. His pop songs and singing voice are monotone and pretty basic. It’s like if I was into this kind of music, I’d pick up something say from Doja Cat over anything he makes 10 times out of 10. I did appreciate the Gangsta Blac and Playa Fly samples though, putting the world onto some Memphis legends.

    2. It’s not about this being “dance’ music, it’s just bad dance music. That new hitmaka shit with Fab is better than all these songs and that’s a dance record also.

    3. Who cares what this old ass m’fer thinks? You aint in the club dancing you geriatric, stfu about anything on the topic of sexy.

    4. don’t be so reckless with your music and street credibilty this is suicide for your career imo but despite what is said here generally people are easy to please.
