For a musician, getting control of master recordings is not an easy task, but for people like Chance The Rapper, the process is somewhat easier. On Saturday (May 28), soul legend Anita Baker thanked the Chicago rapper at a show recently for helping her get her masters back.
In footage shared online, Baker took a second out of a recent performance to point out Chance who was sitting in the audience, and thanked him for the kind gesture of getting her masters.
“You should say hello to a friend of mine by way of the music industry and by way of helping me, helping me to get a hold and ownership of my master recordings,” Baker said, pointing at Chance, who stood up and thanked the audience for the round of applause.
The admiration continued on Twitter when Chance retweeted the video of Baker thanking him and commented on how amazing the singer’s show was on Saturday night.
“I saw one of THE greatest performances of my LIFETIME last night,” Chance wrote. “Thank you so much @IAMANITABAKER for being an inspiration and an icon to so many of US.”
Anita added, “Had no idea you would be in our Midst. Such a nice Surprise. Brought Tears, to my eyes. Hope Ms. Essence enjoyed her Birthday ABXO.”
Chance retweeted her post and thanked her one more time for acknowledging his friend who was at the show with him saying, “WOW the fact that you remembered my friends name AND that it was her birthday just echoes what an INCREDIBLE PERSON you are on top of all that you’ve given artistically. Honored and blessed to call you friend miss
@IAMANITABAKER.”
Chance the Rapper knows a thing or two about acquiring master recordings as he’s preached about that and going independent numerous times. While he’s teaching people about contracts and labels, Chance has fans wondering when he’ll be making his official return to the music industry. Chano recently dropped off two new tracks in “Child of God” and “Wraith” featuring Vic Mensa. He also assisted Supa Bwe on “ACAB” in February.
Last week he dropped another song titled “A Bar About A Bar” which also came with an accompanying music video that dropped on May 26.
This is so fantastic. Gives faith for people in the biz, not everyone is backstabby and for themselves. Somebody get Puff and Mase on the phone.
That’s dope
she sang on them but other people financed the sessions, arranged the songs, played the music engineered the sounds and recording and mix and then promoted the songs to radio in order to make those recordings somewhat valuable. people need to remember Anita Baker for all her grace and talent did not record those songs by herself in a women’s shelter. hope she gets her fair share but she has been world famous for many years and shouldn’t be seen as a victim.
where in the article does it mention her being a “victim”? however she got them back, she likely paid a decent amount for them. straight business transaction, simple as that. obviously she wasnt independent during her recording career, and Anita herself nor the article mention she “deserves” ownership of her masters for free.
who are you arguing with? sound like some me too wokie mad that someone left the comment she didn’t produce and engineer everything on those records for people to be acting like their “hers” – she sang on them and if she can leverage that to make more money all around hooray. if it was anita alone no one would have ever heard a record nothing would have been recorded. facts only. she shouldn’t be seen as a victim point blank
